Tandle Hill Tavern
Quick info
About Tandle Hill Tavern
On Thornham Ln in Manchester, Tandle Hill Tavern is a pub on the edge of Tandle Hill country park, reached by a dirt track with no huge car park. It is one of the few remaining heritage pubs in Manchester, with dark wooden beams, open fires and real ale at the bar. The landlady makes the pies, including a cheese and onion pie, and the pub also serves sausage rolls and homemade scotch eggs. Pies and sausage rolls are not usually made on Fridays, but the pub will make them if asked in advance by Facebook message. Dogs are welcome. Tables are small rather than large dining tables. A tuck shop behind the bar sells pastries and local farm eggs.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the sausage roll, described as the size of a wrist, hot, enormous and the best one several have ever had. Close behind are the homemade pies, including a cheese and onion pie, with the scotch eggs called off the scale and a Father's Day afternoon tea platter with a chocolate and stout cake singled out as unbelievably good. The beer draws praise too, and walkers and cyclists on sponsored routes describe friendly staff, helpful landlords and a donation to their fundraising. Two groups were fed on a Friday, when the sausage rolls and pies are not usually made, after asking ahead. The main complaint concerns space. One reviewer who pre-booked for four found the table barely big enough for four drinks, was told by a woman behind the bar that there had never been complaints, called that rude, and left. Another notes the pub has no huge dining tables and suggests booking in advance for groups, and that there is no huge car park. Behind the bar, reviewers mention local farm eggs for sale.

“The Tandle Hill Tavern is a gorgeous, welcoming traditional pub. The landlords are really friendly, nothing is too much trouble and the home cooked food is amazing. There's always a few locals there and it's a lovely little haven. We had the scotch eggs which were off the scale!”

“I feel like I've been on this earth long enough (46 years) to have sampled a good sausage roll. NOTHING has ever come close to the one I had in the Tandle Hill Tavern. The thing was the size of my wrist and absolutely delicious. The only negative was the food envy l experienced looking across at my friend who was tucking in to the equally spectacular cheese and onion pie. I will be going back at the very next opportunity I get - cannot recommend it enough. A hidden gem!”

“This friendly traditional pub serves THE BEST pies you're ever going to find - homemade by the landlady. They also sell fresh free-range eggs. Well worth a detour from Tandle Hill Park.”

“Called in whilst on a sponsored walk. The beer was very good but you have to try the food. More specifically the sausage roll. Genuinely the best I have ever had. Hot. Enormous and absolutely delicious”

“Called in 2 weeks ago and had a great pint - noticed the sausage rolls. Said we'd be back with around 20 people in a few Fridays and we'd be having one then. They don't do on Fridays - but said drop them a Facebook message and they will. Last Friday we ate every last one, and the pies too. Perfect. Thanks for making them, thanks for chatting, and thanks for the donation for our walk for Springhill too.”
Highlights
“Nestled between farms and Tandle Hills is a quirky, little country pub with real ale and open fires. Our traditional English pub is one of the few remaining heritage pubs in Manchester, with dark wooden beams and a man and a dog in every corner. Enjoy a homemade pie and a pint by the fire and a good laugh with good people.”
