About The Taste Of China
The Taste Of China is a Chinese restaurant at 115 High St in Portsmouth, where meals start with a free plate of cold chicken feet and end with free fruit. Crispy roast duck is on the menu, served with yam, and regulars preorder it ahead of their visit. Sweet and sour pork sits among the main dishes, and banana fritter with ice cream is on hand for dessert. Set meals and a three course lunch meal give diners a fixed option when they want one. The restaurant opens six days a week and closes on Wednesdays. A few gluten free options are also available.

Customer Review Summary
Crispy duck is the dish reviewers return to most, praised for its crispy skin and good flavour, and in one account served deep fried with yam. Close behind are the generous portions and low prices. Diners say set meals fill them up, and one table of thirteen barely needed to order much. Chicken wings, beef noodles, sweet and sour pork Hong Kong style, scallops and banana fritter with ice cream also earn praise, and one reviewer was pleasantly surprised by the gluten free options. Staff are called friendly, while one reviewer describes the dining room as tired. The main complaint comes from one busy night when the restaurant was overbooked. Service was very slow, paired dishes arrived separately, and several items were cold or lukewarm. One reviewer also reports finding an insect in their child's food and raises hygiene concerns. One suggests booking in advance for dinner. Another recalls being served free cold chicken feet as a starter and fruit at the end of the meal.

“They do have a few gluten free options, which was a pleasant surprise. Good portion sizes, friendly staff and excellent value for money. Paid around £16 total for sweet and sour pork, egg fried rice and hot and sour soup.”

“Visited the restaurant on 8 June 2026 with a friend and we ordered their special three course lunch meal. I had the seaweed , beef curry and banana fritter with ice cream. My friend had the chicken and sweet corn soup, sweet and sour pork Hong Kong style and a banana fritter. Every dish was really delicious and served promptly. I can honestly say that this is the best Chinese food we have ever eaten and I would thoroughly recommend this establishment. We will certainly be regular customers ..”

“Firstly i must say i have used this restaurant a number of times and it has always been good, but last night the place was over booked and the kitchen overwhelmed. The service was very slow and when food did arrive it was shoved anywhere on the table, a number of paired dishes did not arrive together and food arrived in dribs and drabs. A number of items were cold or luke warm. The staff were doing their best but run off their feet.”

“Good food with good portion sizes. Came for dinner with 13 people. Had ample amount of space to sit and didnt even have to order much because the portion sizes were good.. The chicken wings we had were particularly good compared to the other dishes. Beef noodles came in second and the last would be the bibimpap The potato was a good side”
