About Chequers Hillcrest Portrush
Chequers Hillcrest Portrush is a fish and chips takeaway on Coleraine Rd in Portrush, owned and run by one family since 1987. The menu starts with fish and chips suppers, with mushy peas available as an add-on. Chicken gets its own section, including a zinger chicken burger and salt and chilli chicken and chips. Vegetarian burgers and sausages sit on the menu too, so the order does not have to centre on fish. Sauces are listed there as well, with sweet chilli among them. Orders are placed at the counter at 121A Coleraine Rd.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw mostly disappointment. Reviewers repeatedly describe chips that seemed reheated, fried twice, or only just cooked and warm, and fish that arrived thin under batter that was chewy, soggy, or not crispy. Several mention grease pooling in the tray. Other orders drew similar complaints: goujons that tasted reheated, burnt sausages, a chicken fillet burger with an uncooked bun, and shredded chicken that sat on a hot plate. Order accuracy is another theme. One diner received two zinger chicken burgers that differed in spice and batter, with mushrooms missing from a chopper burger and mayo left off a chicken burger. A vegetarian burger came with no lettuce or sauce, and salt and chilli chicken lacked any chilli flavour. Several call it expensive for what arrived. A couple of reviewers praise the counter service, and one calls it the best food in the area, but one family reported that most of their meal went in the bin.

“Called in on Friday evening while passing through Portrush. The food we ordered was goujons/chips for 2 people. Absolutely vile & without doubt had been reheated maybe more than once. Extortionate prices as well. Binned the chips & kept the goujons for our Dachshund but unfortunately he wouldn’t eat them either. Says it all.”

“Avoid UTTER CRAP! 54 years of eating Fish and Chips and this was by far the worst I have ever had. My daughter got burnt sausages. I reckon they had been cooked went cold and reheated. My wife's and my Chips were tasteless and only just warm. Fish was cut incredibly thin ( around 3 to 5 mm) whilst the batter was around 8mm thick either side of it. Gave the impression we were getting a good chunk of Fish but in reality some stodgy batter that wasn't even crispy with a wee bit of fish in the middle. Bloke serving looked and sounded like he was stoned couldnt seem to grasp our order at first. Complete waste of money most went in the bin. Very expensive to boot. Avoid.”

“Food is nice but there is something missing or different every time we order. Ordered 2 zinger chicken burgers, both totally different. One crispy, spicy, thin like it should be. Other one battered ,thick chicken with Salty chicken seasoning , not spicy at all. One was orangy colour, other pale batter colour. Chopper burger was nice, but they forgot to put mushrooms on it. Then they forgot to put mayo on chicken burger. I think i better stick to Checkers in town centre, they have never messed up my order there.”

“Got salt and chilli chicken and chips. They tasted of normal flavoured chips and chicken tastes of being cooked in dirty cooking oil. No salt and chilli flavour what so ever. Also had on menu to choose sauce asked for chilli which was on the menu to have sweet chilli. Complete different sauces and has to be a very poor experience. Waste of money. Absolutely disgusting a would highly avoid this place”
