About Sima Tandoori

Sima Tandoori is an Indian restaurant at 97 High St in Porthmadog, with a menu built around curries and breads. The bread list includes a Peshawar nann stuffed with coconut filling, which comes alongside the main dishes. Those mains run from chicken tikka pathia to vindaloo, dhansak and madras, and the kitchen also prepares biriani with either lamb or chicken tikka. The restaurant takes walk-ins without a booking. Upstairs, a second seating area has tables that can be rearranged to fit large groups.

Customer Review Summary

Pathia is the dish reviewers return to most, described as a thick, sweet and tangy chicken tikka sauce and as spot on with both chicken and king prawn. Close behind are a chicken vindaloo that was mostly chicken rather than potato, chicken dhansak, chicken madras, lamb and chicken tikka biriani, and a Peshawar naan stuffed with sticky coconut. Diners also praise the chilli paneer starter, tarka dhal and papadums, and several call the portions generous and the prices reasonable. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming. One reviewer had a much poorer meal, reporting a raw bhindi sabji, an onion bhaji still wet inside, an extremely chewy naan and chicken dishes their friends did not enjoy, though the Paneer Jalfrezi stood out for them. Reviewers also describe the kitchen making a mushroom pilau that was not on the menu, and the restaurant rearranging several tables upstairs for a large unbooked group of golfers.

“The food was quite disappointing overall. It didn’t taste particularly authentic, and several dishes were not cooked properly. The bhindi sabji was still raw, the onion bhaji was undercooked with the filling still wet inside, and the naan was extremely chewy. Even the chips weren’t that good. The Paneer Jalfrezi was really nice and was definitely the highlight of the meal. My friends also didn’t enjoy the chicken dishes. The portions were also less generous than we expected based on some of the other reviews. There were a few good points, especially the Paneer Jalfrezi, but overall the food quality and consistency could be much better.”

“Perfection on a plate. My go to meals for any new Indian restaurant are: starter Chilli Paneer, mains Chicken tikka pathia, pilau rice and a Peshawar nann. My starter was perfect, taste, texture and heat, Chicken tikka pathia, a nice thick sauce which was sweet and tangy, complimented with light and fluffy rice, and to finish off a doughy nann bread stuffed with sticky coconut filling.”

“We had a recommendation for this restaurant. We were not disappointed. We both had pathias. I had chicken not spicy and my husband had king prawn a with a bit more spice. They were both spot on. Staff were welcoming and friendly, joining in with my husbands banter. Portion sizes are generous. We would highly recommend this restaurant.”

“The food here was amazing. The service was excellent. We asked for recommendations for our mains and were impressed with what we had. Would highly recommend going here. The price was reasonable and portion sizes are great”

“My wife and I ordered chicken vindaloo and chicken dhansak. Both dishes were delicious and the vindaloo spice level was perfect. A lot of vindaloos are 50% potatoes. Sima's vindaloo was mostly chicken. Mushroom pilau was not on the menu but the kitchen was happy to accommodate our request and the result was excellent. The staff were attentive and very pleasant. Highly recommended.”
