About Oriel on the Quay

Oriel on the Quay is a family-run cafe on the quay in Poole, at Seaway House, with a view over the harbour. Hand painted murals decorate the room, and the kitchen cooks meals fresh to order, from breakfast through to evening. The brunch menu ends around midday. Stifado with pitta bread is on the menu, and the desserts include an affogato with Baileys and a cheesecake. Most dishes have substitutes for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free diets on request. Upstairs, a room with a 1st-floor Oriel window hosts large groups and events, from birthday parties to a wedding reception. The cafe takes walk-ins. A serving hatch gives a view into the kitchen.

Good to know

“The Oriel on the Quay is a family run restaurant overlooking the beautiful Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island. Tastefully decorated with hand painted murals, our experienced Chefs prepare meals fresh to order from breakfasts to evening meals and the menu is inspired by our love of Mediterranean cuisine. Our menu has something for everyone, and almost all of our dishes have substitutes to cater for vegetarians, vegan and gluten free dietary requirements upon request. The upstairs is large enough to cater for your special occasion and what better way to enjoy it than to look out of the Oriel window on the 1st floor at the glistening sea! We are more than happy to accommodate parties of any size for any occasion from weddings to birthdays, .”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the welcoming table service and the way the team handles group occasions, from an 18th birthday for nine and a wedding reception to a party of 20 arriving for breakfast. One diner on a gluten-free diet describes staff who discussed options so the meal could be eaten with confidence, and the venue is called very dog friendly. Food praise is more scattered: a lunch that came out hot and tasty, a dessert, and an affogato with Baileys. One reviewer notes the brunch menu does not run all day and suggests arriving by midday. The criticism recurs in three reviews and is specific. One diner found the Stifado barely warm and the reheated pitta burnt and tough, with small portions and the least flavoursome cheesecake they had eaten. Another reports an overcooked sirloin and surf and turf, and says black hairs were found in two meals, with only one meal removed from the bill. A third describes a pre-ordered family meal that never arrived after a long wait, with the party told to leave while only the children's food came out.

“Extremely disappointing experience. What should have been a lovely family get-together turned into a stressful and upsetting evening. The staff were rude and unhelpful throughout. We had pre-ordered our meals with a large deposit, yet after waiting for over an hour we were told that our food hadn't even been prepared. Despite explaining that we were already running very late, nothing was done to resolve the situation. They kept blaming us saying we were late. They should have told us immediately when we entered that they cannot provide the service! To make matters worse, we were then told to leave without our meals being served. The only food that eventually arrived was for the children, over an hour after waiting leaving the adults with nothing. This completely ruined what was supposed to be a special family occasion. The lack of organisation, poor customer service, and dismissive attitude shown by the staff were unacceptable. We left feeling hungry, frustrated, embarrassed, and extremely disappointed. I certainly wouldn't recommend this venue based on our experience. the staff cant cope. We had a great meal at 9pm in a nearby Italian restaurant called da Vinci who were so accommodating and friendly. Everything this restaurant wasn't.”

“We had a fantastic experience at Oriel in Poole. Ellie provided excellent service from start to finish and made us feel genuinely welcome. As someone who follows a gluten-free diet, I really appreciated how flexible and accommodating the team were. They took the time to discuss options and made sure I could enjoy my meal with confidence. The venue is also very dog friendly, which made the visit even better. It’s great to find somewhere that combines great food, attentive service, and a welcoming atmosphere for both people and their dogs. Thanks to Ellie and the team for a wonderful experience. We will definitely be back.”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had an amazing experience celebrating an 18th birthday with a group of 9. The girls went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and made the evening extra special. They were all so polite, friendly. The meals were absolutely perfect and tasted amazing. Everything was cooked to perfection and everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed their food. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. Thank you for making the celebration so memorable!”

“Extremely disappointed with our meal this evening. I ordered the sirloin steak (medium) with peppercorn sauce and chips. My husband had the surf and turf and the children had sausages. My husbands steak and Prawns were over cooked and both my husband and youngest child found black hairs in their food. My steak was so overcooked it was difficult to cut. When the waitress asked how the meal was, I explained that we had found hair and the steak was overcooked, she apologised multiple times and said “I don’t know where that could have come from, the chefs are all balding” unfortunately for the waitress there is a serving hatch opposite the toilets that allows you to see straight into the kitchen.. with all the chefs very much still with their hair. I don’t appreciate being lied to. Only my meal was removed from the menu, neither meals that found hair were reduced. Bitterly disappointing”

“Carole and Dave's Wedding. Maria and the team at Oriel's looked after us so well nothing was a problem, we are regular visitor's to Oriel's so it made sense to us to hold our wedding reception here, the attention to detail by the team was exceptional, all we needed to do was turn up. I can't recommend the team at Oriel's enough they were outstanding, they took the pressure from us and it added to making our special day that extra bit special. Thank you once again.”
