About China Chef
China Chef is a Chinese takeaway in Plymouth, based at 3 Seymour Rd. The kitchen cooks Chinese cuisine, and family members of the original owners still work there today. Payment by card is accepted. The takeaway gets busy, and a queue sometimes stretches out the door, so a wait is common when it is at its busiest. Some customers collect their orders themselves, because waits for delivery can run up to 2 hours when the kitchen is busy.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the quality and flavour of the cooking, describing tasty dishes that are not salty, with good size portions and plenty of different flavours. Several call it the best Chinese takeaway they have found locally, and one customer who has ordered since 1990 notes that family members of the original owners still work there. Staff are described as friendly, and one reviewer says orders come out quickly even when the queue reaches the door. Delivery is the recurring trade-off. One reviewer says the place is so busy that delivery takes very long, so they suggest collecting instead. A minority of reviews are negative about the cooking itself. One diner binned a beef chow mein after two mouthfuls, having found an earlier order tasteless. Another describes bland dishes, overcooked rice and raw pancake rolls. Even a mostly positive review says the Hong Kong chicken sweet and sour was a bit chewy.

“Our favourite Chinese in Plympton. Decent food and average prices. Small downside is they are always so busy that a delivery is usually up to 2 hours, so best to go and get it.”

“I slipped over on the wet floor a few weeks ago, saved my food 😆 of course. Staff were all over me, more embarrassing on my part, but went back in last week and again on Saturday 14th February 2026 and noticed a new mat right where i slipped. Good job to all and for acting on the incident. Good job we only live up the road cause my backside was throbbing when I got home. The wife and kids, we laughed it off afterwards. China chef. I bow to you. Well done 🫵🤘🤙”

“Disgusting food, I had beef chow mein and the beef itself smelt like ammonia, the whole dish had an aroma of a farmyard!!! Had two mouthfuls, then threw it in the bin. This was the second time we ordered from here, the first time the food was tasteless. Don't waste your money!! Will never return.”
