Quick info
About Imperial Garden
Imperial Garden is a family-owned Chinese restaurant on Ebrington St in Plymouth, open since 2007. It keeps a separate, extensive vegan menu alongside the main one, with vegan chicken, prawn, squid, pork and duck, plus a vegan fried rice selection. Sweet and sour vegan chicken balls sit on that list, while crispy beef with honey and chilli and salt and spicy chips come from the main side. The team explains the Chinese menu to diners at the restaurant, which helps when choosing between the two. Service runs evenings only, every day except Wednesday. Payment is cash only, with no card payments accepted.

Customer Review Summary
The vegan menu draws the most attention, with reviewers describing pages of imaginative dishes beyond tofu, including vegan prawn, squid, chicken, pork and duck, sweet and sour vegan chicken balls, and a selection of vegan fried rice. Close behind is praise for takeaway that arrives hot and correct, with the crispy beef in honey and chilli, chicken balls with plenty of chicken, big portions of chicken fried rice, salt and spicy chips and the hoisin sauce singled out. Several also mention friendly staff and a clean restaurant. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the portion tiny, the crispy chilli beef chewy and mostly onions, and the kung po king prawns sweaty and swimming in sauce, while another found the chips a bit soft. Two note that it is cash only, one calling that strange these days. One longtime customer describes a birthday party of fifteen where the staff explained the Chinese menu, as they have for over a decade.

“Amazing, delicious and helpful Chinese restaurant! We’ve been ordering from Imperial Garden in Plymouth for several years now. We’d been previously loyal to another popular Chinese takeaway in the city, but they let us down a few times, so we switched to Imperial Garden. Imperial Garden have never gotten an order wrong - they have always provided the food perfectly. Also, it’s delicious food, we’ve never had a bad dish. Also, as vegans, the choice for us is incredible. Notable choices include the sweet and sour vegan chicken balls - honestly these are incredible! The salt and spicy chips are also lush, as well as having a delicious selection of vegan fried rice so you don’t have to skip on the taste just because you’re vegan. We also have a meat eater in the family who can attest to how amazing the non-vegan dishes are too. The staff are always really helpful on the phone, friendly and efficient - when delivered, food arrives at the right time and is nice and hot. Placing the order on the phone is easy and without the faff that can sometimes happen when ordering on the phone. What’s prompted me to write this review is that the restaurant helped us today with an unrelated issue - I cannot tell you how impressed I am that they went out of their way to help us when I suspect a lot of other businesses wouldn’t have been bothered. Absolutely recommend this lovely restaurant and takeaway”

“We had our first Chinese takeaway from Imperial Garden Restaurant last night, and it was simply amazing. The food was outstanding, and there was no problem delivering to Plympton either. We’d been let down too many times by our local takeaway with inconsistent quality, so we decided it was time for a change—and what a change it was! From now on, Friday night means one thing: an Imperial Garden Chinese takeaway. Highly recommended! 🥢👍”

“Since the establishment of the restaurant in 2007, Imperial Garden has won the hearts of the local people and beyond. The birth of the restaurant traces its roots all the way back to China where Head Chef, Cheng, fell in love with Chinese cuisine and its flavours. From a young age, he was experimenting with food and learning recipes from fellow chefs and the local people enabling him to perfect his recipes over the years to serve the delicious food today. Imperial Garden has been named as the ‘Top 3 Chinese Restaurants in Plymouth’ for 6 Consecutive Years since 2016. Today, Imperial Garden continues to operate as a family-owned restaurant, delivering authentic and delicious Chinese food for all, and has expanded to providing Vegan Chinese”
