About Horn Milk Bar

Horn Milk Bar is a Scottish restaurant in Perth on the A90, run as a roadside gift shop at the front and a cafe at the back. The cafe has a retro, canteen-style interior. Its bacon rolls hold 4 or 5 rashers, and the bacon is kept pre-cooked and warm rather than cooked to order. The rolls come unbuttered, with sauce sachets on the side. Curly fries and rocky road are available as add-ons. The gift shop sells souvenirs, local items, strawberries and ice cream, so there is something to browse before or after a meal. Horn Milk Bar is open daily, daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return to Horn Milk Bar for the bacon roll, which several repeat is the "world's best", praising the soft, fresh roll, the generous pile of bacon and prompt service. Curly fries and rocky road get a mention alongside it, and the coffee and tea are called good. The staff are described as friendly and welcoming, and the retro, canteen-style room and the gift shop at the front also draw comment. Dogs are not allowed, but one reviewer says food is brought out to the picnic area. The bacon is also where the criticism lands. Several reviewers found it dry, thick and salty, and one was told it suited customers who like crispy bacon after saying it had clearly been kept warm for a while. Others note the rolls are not cooked to order, arrive colder from a metal tin, and come without butter. One reviewer describes a server sighing and rolling her eyes when a customer asked for bacon with no fat. Another found the inside very smoky on a return visit, so they ate at the picnic area.

“First and last time at the horn. Nice little place, bacon rolls are nice. However.. my partner asked for bacon with no fat as a preference, and the girl serving sighed and rolled her eyes as the guy serving explained that its already cooked and that he would do his best. The girl continued to huff and make snide faces, rolling her eyes even when she went away and came back. She then made a snarky comment about what number of roll the guy was on as she returned. Not a very nice or professional person doing that over someone's preference of how they want their food.”

“I have passed this place for years with the anticipation of stopping in, drawn by the self proclaimed ‘world best bacon roll’ on the way to a job. Genuinely disappointed, we ordered 4 bacon rolls £5 each btw so I had high hopes. It’s just a basic bacon roll nothing special about the roll not prepared in any special way not even buttered. The bacon (4 rashers) was thick catering, dry and left nothing in the mouth but the taste of salt. Work mate and I couldn't even look at our second roll which is unheard of. “Worlds best bacon roll” This is no better than any roadside van you could get anywhere, Save your money and just go to Greggs.”

“Coffee and bacon roll = £8.50!!!! No butter on the roll. Sauce sachets on the side. Basic set up. Canteen vibe Rolls are not cooked to order so it was colder than I hoped due to being pre cooked and stored in a metal tin. The fat was also stringy. For £5.80 I would expect better! Restaurant run down and signage missing”

“Such a cool retro cafe. Bacon rolls, as others say, are absolutely stand out. Coffee also really good. Prices fair and staff really friendly and service prompt.”
