About Chiang Mai Kitchen
Chiang Mai Kitchen is a Thai restaurant in Oxford, set in a Grade II listed building down an alleyway off the high street at 130A High St. A sign on the high street marks the turn, which helps first-time visitors find the entrance. The menu includes crispy prawns, pineapple fried rice and mango sticky rice. Mains do not come with a side, so diners order rice separately alongside their dishes.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the curries, with the seafood curry called rich and satisfying, the red curry singled out, and a green curry enjoyed despite being a little too liquid with overcooked beef. Close behind are the crispy prawns, soft and tender inside, along with the calamari, pineapple fried rice and mango sticky rice, described as sweet, creamy and comforting. Scallops and a sum tum salad also earn praise. Several mention big portions and quick service, though one finds servings only just enough for the cost, and mains come without rice, which is ordered separately. Price is the most repeated complaint, with reviewers saying it is higher than the food justifies. One Thai home cook gave a harsh account: hard sticky rice that seemed frozen and microwaved, even in its replacement, a sour pad krapow that staff put down to British pork, and greasy corn fritters. Large groups were accommodated, and one party was seated together once a table opened up. For a birthday, the team brought out a cake with a candle and turned the lights down to sing.

“Really good Thai restaurant. Staff are amazing and the food was superb.”

“Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience with the food. The sticky rice was hard and uneatable, likely frozen and microwaved, and even the replacement wasn't much better. The pad krapow (basil pork) had a strange, sour smell and taste, which staff attributed to "British pork," and the corn fritters looked pre-cooked/frozen, tasting old and overly greasy. As a Thai home cook, I understand ingredient limitations abroad, but serving poor-quality, reheated food at these prices is unacceptable.”

“Had lunch in this lovely place. The décoration is authentic, and the restaurant is very clean. I had a green curry. The portions of both the rice and curry were generous. However, I felt the rice wasn't as fresh as it could have been- it was still good, but it seemed like it had been prepared some time earlier rather than freshly made. The curry was also a little too liquid for my taste, although it was still enjoyable. The beef was a bit overcooked. My friend's dish was excellent, and the spring rolls we had as starters were delicious. The team was lovely and provided great service throughout our visit.”

“The team were incredibly accommodating of our large group (12) and once ordered, food came out incredibly quickly! Everything was incredibly tasty and in big servings. We had a birthday to celebrate and Kavya was incredibly kind in offering a cake with a candle for us to celebrate, even at short notice. She and her team then even turned the lights out to sing with us, which I think they did a few times already as it seems to be a popular birthday celebration spot that afternoon! It was a very special day in Oxford indeed, and very glad we spotted the sign from the high street. The restaurant is situated down an alleyway, and it is very much worth the short walk. Thank you Kavya for making our dining experience special! :)”
