Quick info
About XI' AN OXFORD
XI' AN OXFORD is a Chinese restaurant at 197 Banbury Rd in Oxford, with gluten-free options spread across its menu. Gluten-free dishes carry a sticker on the regular menu and a star on the takeaway menu, so diners avoiding gluten can tell them apart from the standard versions. Dishes can also be modified to avoid allergens such as nuts and sesame. Oysters in black bean sauce and the house noodles are among the named dishes. A bar serves wine and beer, and the restaurant takes large parties. It opens Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the gluten free choice. Coeliac diners describe a huge selection and a regular who goes weekly, while one reviewer with nut and sesame allergies says most dishes could be modified, though they suggest an allergen matrix would help. Oysters in black bean sauce and duck are named as standouts by one diner, and another praises the wine collection. Large groups come up repeatedly: a party of 39 for a Lunar New Year dinner and a wedding lunch for 70 both describe patient, relaxed staff and food everyone enjoyed. Service is called fast, friendly and attentive. The one sharply negative review found the service good but the food awful, saying the House noodles arrived crunchy and objecting that a restaurant named for a city famous for noodles should know the basics. Several reviewers still describe the food as fresh and flavoursome. One coeliac diner on a first-ever gluten free Chinese takeaway recalls the little gluten free stickers on the boxes, marking each dish apart from the standard versions.

“The service was good but the food was awful. For those who don’t know, Xi’an is a city in Northern China and it’s famous for its noodles. However, whoever cooks noodles in this restaurant clearly does not even know the basics — the House noodles were crunchy, can you imagine?! It is puzzling to me that they can somehow still be a chef. Very disappointed. Please, don’t misinform people by naming your restaurant Xi’an. You are literally smearing the city.”

“We recently had our wedding lunch in the restaurant for 70 people. The guests, my husband and I all agree the food was amazing and the staff was brilliant at keeping things relaxed and stress-free. Thank you Gary and everyone on the staff for making our afternoon so enjoyable!”
