Quick info
About Cleaver & Wake
Cleaver & Wake is a modern British restaurant in Nottingham, at 1a The Great Northern Close, and it takes its name from two Victorian lace dressers who worked the original site. The kitchen is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. The menu is short and changes seasonally, so dishes vary through the year. Current plates include short rib ravioli as a starter and Beef Wellington with a Cabernet Sauvignon sauce, served with carrots. Bone marrow creamed potatoes with gremolata are among the sides. Cocktails, including an Old Fashioned, share the drinks list with port, and a sommelier is on hand. The dress code is smart casual. Guests can request a special occasion or pre-ordered flowers when booking.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the beef Wellington, though opinions split sharply. One diner calls it cooked to perfection, while another found overcooked ham, underseasoned mushroom duxelles and an unseared steak, praising only the Cabernet Sauvignon sauce, the carrots and the mushroom butter with the bread. Close behind, the short rib ravioli, the beef tartar, the beetroot carpaccio, the crab, the venison and the lamb draw praise, and several mention the cocktails, including an Old Fashioned. Service is described as friendly and professional, with a manager who introduced the fresh fish at the pass, and a wedding party credits a coordinator and sommelier. Prices come up repeatedly. One reviewer reports tinned pineapple in the pineapple trifle, an extremely sickly cherry cake, and waits of 10 to 15 minutes between dishes for a large group. Two others felt the cost outweighed the meal. Another noted that no birthday gesture was made after the occasion was mentioned. The close comes from a reviewer whose wellington complaint led staff to apologise and discount the bone marrow creamed potatoes.

“We visited for my fiancee's birthday. I had pre-ordered flowers for the occasion (option available at point of booking), which were beautiful when they arrived at our table. This option is a very nice touch. The decor inside was very elegant and pleasing. The atmosphere was fantastic, and being a Saturday evening, it was extremely busy. The menu isn't large, which is also pleasing. The quality of the food, as well as it's presentation, we're exceptional. There is also a great range of cocktails, including my favourite Old Fashioned! My only negative comment would be aimed more at the clientele. There is a smart casual dress code, and it is a shame that not everyone respected it! Finally, I would just like to add a comment about the staff. Everyone was accommodating, friendly, and punctual. In fact, hours before our reservation time, I received a phone call from the restaurant, apologising in advance due to the air-conditioning being broken. I was reassured that measures had been taken to ensure that the restaurant temperature was kept as low as possible given the hot weather conditions. Not many would be so courteous! Overall, and exceptional evening, thank you all.”

“Given the price point and other reviews, I had high hopes for a standout meal. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. With that said, the Cabernet Sauvignon sauce that comes with the beef Wellington is incredible and the carrots are a close second. The mushroom butter with the bread is another standout. The beef infused butter, far less successful. Imagine over seared/burned beef flavor being infused with butter, less than desirable. The Wellington itself was quite disappointing. One of the few dishes I've actually mentioned to the wait staff as being disappointed; Overcooked ham and underseasoned mushroom duxelles wrapped around an overcooked, yet not seared, steak. I kept trying to find redeeming qualities but ultimately, I did not finish the crust layers. If it wasn't for the sauce and carrots, I would have sent the dish back. The bone marrow creamed potatoes with gremolata were quite good. After discussing the meal quality with the staff, they discounted the potatoes and apologized. For the price point, I'd recommend seeking out other restaurants.”

“We held our wedding in Cleaver and Wake last month, and it was truly the most incredible experience! The food, staff and venue were all perfect - we had so many guests feedback about how great they were. The options for the wedding breakfast from the seasonal menu were delicious, and guests could choose from a shortlist of 3 options that we picked, with the venue going the extra mile to have special meals made specifically for any dietary requirements / vegetarian / children's options. We also had amazing canapes and evening food bowls / baps, which went down a treat. The staff blended into the background on the day, always available if you needed something but not distracting from the festivities. The co-ordination of the ceremony and the arrangement of the flowers were also done to perfection. We visited the restaurant to try food and wine options, and the sommelier recommended a special bottle of red for our guests, with the bar staff creating custom 'his' and 'hers' cocktails from flavour profiles that we liked - these were super popular! The art deco design of the building provided excellent photograph backgrounds, as did the local canal and rooftop of the venue. Our co-ordinator Sophie kept in close contact with us all the way up to the day, and she had excellent ideas for how to maximise the experience. On the day, she made us feel at ease, and organised all of our guests perfectly. Overall, we could not recommend Cleaver and Wake highly enough for anyone considering a wedding or party here. We will definitely be visiting the restaurant on our anniversaries :)”

“Stunning! I dont have a single complaint! 🤩 Anything I have to say is positive - on the expensive yes but I will say I know why and it was worth paying Service - on the ball, polite & attentive, the team are all well presented too in uniform, aprons everything And also we were already asked before we could really think if we needed anything, our glasses weren't dry etc (we didnt drink alot but it was good to know that we didnt have to struggle to be looked after essentially) The menu is simple, not over packed for choice which I think is so important as alot of places now give too much choice and it can be a bit over facing - I did also feel that its the kind of place where you cant choose anything wrong as it's all done so well! I dont usually choose lamb as a protein but I went for it and it was delicious and bursting with all kinds of flavours and textures 😋 We could see the pass from where we were seated and it was fascinating watching things be plated with care and precision each time - I will add that no food sat waiting on the pass when it was ready, they're very organised and the moment something was ready it was swept away - it doesnt seem like there's sections more the whole restaurant is everyone's section and they look after eachother and get things done properly We skipped starters as we did have a big lunch prior and just had mains and desserts 🍨 we each had cocktails that were delicious and also had some port at the end when we had pudding, again lots but not an overwhelming choice which was We had a really nice table at one of the soft seater benches in the center of the room, and looking around it doesnt seem like theres a single table that would be 'less preferred' or 'uncomfortable' its all well laid out and tastefully decorated and equipped - from the chairs to the silverware We also had a card on our table saying happy anniversary which was a nice touch - it was asked in the booking prompt about any special occasions so its good that they like to be aware and want to take an extra step in caring for guests I could go on and on it was just so nice to have expectations met and exceeded - Cleaver and Wake is exactly what you want for fine dining they get it just right I think ❤️ Looking forward to visiting again when we can, thank you Cleaver & Wake Team!”

“I had the short rib ravioli to start and I was blown away from the first bite. Despite a small serving, it was packed with flavour and there was a surprisingly generous amount of meat stuffed into the pasta. It was the perfect start to my meal. My main course was the Haunch of Estate Venison, with a serving of the braised red cabbage on the side. It was all well-cooked but surprisingly paled in comparison to the ravioli. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the meal, but for me, at these prices, I wouldn’t be rushing back. I was told the menu changes seasonally however, so I will be looking out for their upcoming offers to see if anything catches my eye. I do also want to note that the staff were extremely professional & friendly, so I felt very comfortable during my visit.”
