About BEAR Hockley
BEAR Hockley is a restaurant and day cafe at 36a Carlton St in Hockley, Nottingham, that turns into a cocktail bar at night. Daytime service centres on speciality coffee, brunch and all-day dining, and the drink list includes beetroot coffee alongside banana bread matcha. Vegan soft serve comes as sundaes with a choice of toppings, including biscoff and salted caramel. Once the evening starts, the team serves cocktails, wine and small plates, with Espresso Martinis linking the coffee menu to the bar. The kitchen runs seasonal menus, and the breakfast dishes include shakshuka and hash browns. An allergen menu is on hand for anyone who needs it, and the savoury side extends to an onion bhaji burger.

Customer Review Summary
Vegan soft serve is the draw reviewers raise most, from a biscoff and salted caramel sundae described as smooth, creamy and a big portion, to raspberry and sprinkles and a banoffee topping. One visitor says it alone is a reason to plan another trip. Close behind are the coffee and brunch dishes: a banana bread matcha, beetroot coffee, shakshuka, and hash browns called the highlight of one meal, along with very generous breakfast portions. The onion bhaji burger also earns praise. The cooking draws more mixed comments. The hot honey chicken was called bland, and a pancake dish came with overcooked, bitter chicken and bacon that was more fat than meat, though the pancakes were soft and fluffy. One group queued for seats around lunchtime, and another felt left standing around even though few people were there. Staff are mostly described as friendly and quick, and one diner with nut and dairy allergies notes that the server had them check the allergen menu and wrote their allergies on the order.

“Hands down the best spot in Notts. Genuinely thinking of planning another trip for the soft serve alone! A vegan option oasis!”

“Very generous breakfast portions, although granola was quite small and sweet, tasty though. Staff are lovely, good coffee, relaxed atmosphere”

“If I could give 6 stars to service I would! Ryan made us feel so welcome and looked after ... He knew it was mine and my friends 40th birthday and went out of his way to ensure everything was perfect. I really can't thank Ryan enough for making my birthday so fabulous and exactly what we were after. The cocktails were fantastic and food was delicious and everything was speedy service too!! Will be coming back again with all my friends. Thank you so much”

“I visited yesterday after work with some friends to try the vegan soft serve icecream! As someone with multiple allergies main ones being nuts and dairy, I have never in my 27 years of life been able to try soft serve ice cream so this was a life changing occasion for me 😂 I went for the biscoff & salted caramel sundae and the staff member who served me ensured I’d checked the allergen menu (which is great btw) to make sure my order was safe for me, they took my allergies seriously and noted them down on my order. Service was super quick I also got the pineapple refresher which was truly delish and then the ice cream was everything I could have wished for and more! Smooth, creamy, a lil salty and sweet with the toppings and a big portion!! I was even able to try my friends sundae who had gone for the raspberry & sprinkles ones (which is also super exciting for me as I can never usually try anyone else’s food due to allergies) I will be returning 100 times, have already planned to come back on Saturday! 100% recommend to anyone with allergies or anyone who fancy’s soft serve because my friends all agreed it was better than normal ice cream anyway 🕺🏽”

“We went in to escape the rain as it's dog friendly, but were really impressed with this cafe! It's set up beautifully and has a lot of good options for food and drink. Not many places do vegan soft serve, so it was nice to be able to have some. They have multiple different toppings (I had banoffee) which was also a bonus! There is a lot more seating towards the back as well.”
