About The Rural kitchen
In a courtyard setting on High Grn in Norwich, The Rural Kitchen operates as a cafe next to a butchers shop on site. The short menu runs to six dishes, with Eggs Benedict among them. Dogs are welcome inside, making it a straightforward stop for anyone out walking one. Tables get marked as reserved, including at lunchtime, so booking ahead is worth doing if a seat matters. It opens Monday to Saturday for daytime hours only, staying closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. The courtyard setting alongside the butchers gives the cafe a distinct spot within the same site, rather than a standalone storefront.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the eggs Benedict and full English, described by one diner as perfectly cooked with runny free range yolks, alongside lovely cakes, a scone and sausage roll, and a melt in the mouth fillet steak. Several also praise the setting, a courtyard cafe tucked next to a butchers, calling it relaxed, welcoming, and dog friendly, with reasonable prices noted by more than one visitor. Against this sits a recurring and pointed complaint about front of house treatment: multiple reviewers describe being told tables were "reserved" despite sitting empty for the better part of an hour, one recounts being served cow's milk after requesting soya and receiving no eye contact when paying, and another was refused any drink at all on a rainy day. A separate reviewer was turned away for coffee at 3:15pm despite an advertised 4pm close, with no apology offered. One longtime local customer, who had previously rated the food and service highly, says this treatment was enough to consider taking their custom to a competitor instead.

“I dont like leaving bad reviews but after my visit with a friend this week this place left me feeling rather upset. I cannot believe the how awfully i was spoken to. We sat outside, ordered our coffee i politely asked if they did breakfast …”

“Would like to give this little rusl place a nice review; however, when I arrived at 3.15 pm for a coffee (closing advertised as 4om) I was told no we've turned all the machines off - no apology, no offer if anything else instead. Poor show rual kitchen.”

“Went with my cousin June. Had a fantastic melt in the mouth fillet steak. It felt so special. Friendly and a great atmosphere. Thankyou.”

“Today I popped in and was met with a lady who was telling me that all the tables were reserved and that there was no space and then she said she would put me on the end of a table. She wasn’t very warm or hospitable and seemed more interested in her regular people in the café than anybody so where she had seated me she said all of the other tables were reserved. I spent a whole hour in there and none of the tables occupied the whole time And I also asked for Soya milk and she looked very upset that I asked her for this and came back with normal cow milk. Very passive aggressive and snappy ! When I left she took my £3 for the tea and didn’t even give me eye contact !”

“The rural kitchen is my local cafe which we have visited on a few occasions. The food and service has always been very good but sadly the service received this morning was extremely poor and disappointing . We were made to feel most unwelcome by the lady serving. I’m more than happy to spend my money elsewhere such as Green Pastures in future.”
