About Magee Street Bakery
Magee Street Bakery is a coffee shop and bakery on Derby Rd in the Abington area of Northampton. The team bakes sourdough bread, pastries and cakes fresh each day, with carrot cake among the cakes. A featured sandwich menu changes every fortnight and covers breakfast, lunch, vegetarian and vegan options. Every Sunday is #ScotchEggSunday, when the kitchen makes a home-made scotch egg in a rotating variation, such as Mediterranean lamb, while they last. Coffee comes in regular and large sizes, and a tea selection sits alongside it. The shop is open Wednesday to Sunday, daytime only, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what most reviewers raise first, from a flat white one calls the best in a long time to a smooth cup that is not too bitter and a pistachio cappuccino described as delicious. The chai latte is a repeat order for a couple of diners. Close behind are the baked goods. Carrot cake is called generously sized and the best ever, banana bread and banana cake earn praise, and a pistachio cruffin, sausage rolls and sourdough loaves also come up. Savoury picks include a double egg and cheese sandwich, spicy sausage toasties, a smoked mackerel toastie and a Mediterranean lamb scotch egg. Staff are often called lovely and friendly. Reviewers note the shop gets busy and finding a seat can be awkward, and two suggest ordering a large coffee because the regular runs small. One longtime regular reports that a female owner spoke abruptly to children whose legs were in the way at a tight table, leaving the family feeling unwelcome. Another reviewer was so full of carrot cake that they took the rest home in a bag.

“What a wonderful find. The coffee was absolutely lovely. Best flat white I’ve had in a long time. And had the best banana bread EVER. It was busy as it was just after parkrun. Would love to go back and sample their breakfast.”

“Ever since I found this place I'm hooked in and coming here as often as possible. The food is proper artisan made with heart. They sell sourdough bread, croissants, sausage rolls and all, everything is just stunning good. Toasted sandwiches are always well filled. The coffee is nice and smooth, not too bitter, not over roasted. Service is amazing. The toilet and the main area is very clean too. The only drawback is, that the place might get crowded at times, and finding place to seat can be a bit awkward. But that shouldn't stop anyone from visiting and giving them a try.”

“I visited Magee Street Bakery recently with my children and nephew. I have been a regular customer and have always enjoyed the produce, but unfortunately the experience this time left me feeling genuinely disappointed. The barista was lovely, as usual, and the owner’s husband has always come across as pleasant and welcoming. However, the female owner, Jules, came across as abrupt and made us feel as though we were an inconvenience rather than valued customers. The seating is quite tight, and although the children were sat at the table, their legs may have been slightly in the way due to the limited space. Rather than approaching the situation kindly or politely, Jules spoke to them in a way that made them feel like they were simply in the way and needed to move. What upset me most was the feeling that we were being treated differently to other customers. We were made to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable, which is a real shame because I used to visit frequently and really enjoyed supporting the bakery. It has now reached the point where whether I visit depends on whether Jules is front of house or not, which is a sad state of affairs for a place I previously liked so much. Sadly, this experience has tainted my view of Magee Street Bakery. Good food matters, but so does how customers, especially families with children, are made to feel.”
