About Francine's Newquay

Francine's Newquay is a fish and chips takeaway on Chesterton Place in Newquay, operating on a walk-in basis for collection only. The kitchen fries its chips in beef dripping and offers both cod and chips and a hake and chips alternative, with battered sausage and savaloy on the side. Portions are large, and a regular order is often enough to share between two. A queue builds at busy times, particularly on summer evenings, and the start of the new potato season is signposted in advance. The counter does not take reservations, and customers travel from out of town, including from St Ives, to pick up an order.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise cod and chips fried in beef dripping, with huge portions that one says a regular chips order feeds two. Hake is described as light and flaky, a cheaper alternative to cod. Complaints are fewer: one regular found four portions of chips mostly inedible, with an over-salted spam fritter and a sausage precooked before battering, and a small cod came out smaller than before.

“Top fish and chips, best in Newquay! ----- yet another visit, yet another huge portion. great food. ----- Latest visit Jan 24. Just as good as always, had a small cod and chips and it was still too much to eat £9.40 ------ Feb 2024: for the 1st time a small fish and chips is exactly that. compare the photo to the previous which was also a small cod and chips. still good, just a fair bit smaller ------ April 25. Still good. Busy as always, great food. _-------- August 26 For every time I edit the review I come many times more, always great food. New review this time as the first time I tried the hake and chips. Currently £15.95 for food and chips, the hake was £10.30 so a really good saving. The hake was about the size of a standard cod, light and flakey. Little bit less flavour than cod, but for £5 less it's Def a good alternative. Did was great as always, to much to eat as always.”

“The best fish and chips I have ever had. Really nice.”

“Fish and chips were stunning. Love that the chips are cooked in beef dripping and the fish was cooked perfectly. The portion sizes are huge, great value for money. You could feed a family of four with 2 regular fish and chips.”

“Having been here so many times and never ever had a bad word. Today was my most disappointing visit ever and I hope it's just a one off and not a sign of things to come. To be fair there is a sign warning about new potato season so maybe it's just that. But four portions of chips mostly inedible. Shame as chip shop for a family of six costs so much and is a rare treat. We also live in St Ives so it's a treat trek ! Wasn't worth that trek today. The fish was cooked well as ever but small than normal. The new pots for the curry sauce/mushy peas was welcoming more easily recycled. Sausage was fine. Spam fritter was okay but over salted today. Staff lovely as ever though and I hate to fault the place. Just hope it's a one off and my next review is more positive again! This is an update : 28/08/26 Tried again today nothings really changed since last review except sausage has got worse as it's precooked before being battered. Chips slightly better than my last review but nothing like it used to be back in the day. And expensive as hell now at £15.95 for just the cod and chips and that was a regular not even a large.”
