Quick info
About Ginger & Joe
Ginger & Joe is a small plates restaurant and cocktail bar on East Street in Newquay, taking walk-ins across the room and the bar. The menu reads as a varied, largely gluten free selection of tapas-style plates, with most dishes built around that approach aside from the sourdough. The kitchen runs from chicken satay and aubergine katsu through monkfish scampi and calamari to sides like fries and crispy courgette. Cocktails sit alongside, with a varied range served at the bar. Service runs on a polite, helpful front-of-house, and the format keeps the ordering and seating in one continuous room.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the cocktails and friendly service, with the chicken satay, aubergine katsu and monkfish scampi named among the small plates. One coeliac diner valued staff answering questions about gluten free oats. The recurring complaint is value, as portions are described as tiny for the price, and one calls the calamari thinly sliced. Another reports fungus gnats landing on food near the plants.

“We decided to try here as practically everything on the menu was gluten free (except sour dough and maybe the oats). We ordered the chicken satay, the aubergine katsu, crispy courgette, monkfish scampi, fries and the mackerel. The mackerel was supposed to have buttered oats but as they weren’t 100 percent sure if they were gluten free oats, we opted to have the mackerel without. They were so happy to oblige and answer questions which is great when we need coeliac safe food. We were advised that the food was described as small plates so we ordered a lot. I can honestly say we probably ordered one dish too many, as the portion sizes were big enough for us. We didn’t have space for dessert. The food was delicious. We will look forward to another visit soon.”

“Service was polite, friendly and helpful. Quality and portion size of dishes were inconsistent but some interesting flavour combinations and a varied range of cocktails. Felt overpriced, there were no deals or combos offered like other tapas bars. However, the overall rating is affected by the presence of what appeared to be fungus gnats. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant near some plants which they seemed to be coming from with multiple hovering around the table and landing on our food whilst we ate. I think removing or treating the plants would make the dining experience a lot more pleasant.”

“Food was good and the service was good too. My only issue was the price compared to the portion sizes. I get that it’s a small plates kind of place but some of the prices felt more like full meal prices for quite small portions. Still a nice local business but I just think the value for money could be better.”
