Oriental Chef
Quick info
About Oriental Chef
Oriental Chef is a Chinese takeaway on Commercial Street in Newport, operating from a single address at 99 Commercial St. The business is structured as a takeaway rather than a sit-down restaurant, so orders are prepared for collection or delivery rather than on-premise dining. Its format centers on Chinese cuisine prepared to order, with the name and type indicating a focus on cooked dishes rather than groceries or general retail. The location on Commercial Street places it within Newport's main commercial corridor, giving it a straightforward presence in the city's established retail area. The takeaway model means the operation is built around off-site consumption, with customers collecting meals to eat elsewhere. Because the business is defined by its takeaway function, the emphasis is on food that travels well and can be finished outside the premises. The address at 99 Commercial St serves as the sole point of contact for ordering and pickup.

Customer Review Summary
Regulars and first-time customers alike single out the chicken balls and crispy duck as standout dishes, with one long-time orderer calling the food fresh and tasty across years of visits. Close behind, the Singapore chow mein comes up repeatedly, though opinions split: some find it acceptable but bland, and one diner received plain chow mein instead. On the negative side, multiple reviewers describe specific letdowns, chips served hard and lukewarm, tough ribs, slimy noodles, undercooked rice, and chips tasting of dirty oil. Service complaints are just as recurring, one order took over three hours, another arrived incomplete and was delivered half an hour late in a soggy bag, and a card payment turned into what one customer called an epic meltdown when the machine was not brought. A few note that the female boss and serving staff can be polite and helpful, while others describe the phone attitude as uncaring and the overall service as a disgrace.
