About Shanghai Chef
Shanghai Chef is a Chinese takeaway at 46 Church Rd in Newport, open daily with evenings only. The menu centres on Chinese cooking, with crab claws and lemon spare ribs on the list alongside chow mein and curry sauce. The restaurant takes orders by phone, and the line often goes to voicemail or is busy at busy times. Orders also come in through Uber Eats, so the phone is not the only way to place one.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers are sharply split, and the most common thread is delivery orders placed through Uber Eats that arrive very late or not at all. Several describe the app marking the order as delivered when nothing had come, phone calls going straight to voicemail or a busy line, and no refund offered. One says the food that finally arrived seemed to have sat in a hot hold, with rubbery, chewy chicken. Others report bland chow mein and curry sauce, and king prawn Singapore noodles that arrived without a single prawn. One reviewer reports chicken balls that smelled of dirty oil and had black specks in the batter. People answering the phone are described as rushed and rude, though the driver is called apologetic in two accounts. Collection orders fare better. Two diners praise food that was ready quickly and piping hot, naming crab claws, chicken foo yung, lemon spare ribs, Singapore fried rice, beef in black bean sauce and sling rolls. Still, the detail unhappy customers return to most is a refund refused because the order went through the app.

“First and only time ordering from here - total nightmare! Ordered via Uber Eats at around 7.15. By 8.30 food was not delivered - just said on the way. Called - lady very rude saying the chef will be preparing the order. Called again at 9.15 and asked for a refund and told no as it was via Uber Eats. Again very rude. The shop then simply stopped answering the phone and just continually allowed it to go to voicemail. The driver then finally arrived at 10.30pm. He was very apologetic and said how he had a lot of orders that were very delayed. I can allow for Saturday nights being busier but this was awful. Why accept the order if you are too busy to fulfil it? When the food did arrive it has clearly been set under hot lights or in a hot hold for hours - it was inedible - chicken was disgusting, rubber and chewy. Never again!”

“Great fast service, lovely food. We ordered Singapore fried rice, beef in black bean sauce, plain rice, and sling rolls. Really enjoyed, can't fault it 👌”

“I have been ordering from this restaurant for many years and never had a complaint until now. My experience ordering tonight was terrible from start to finish. I ordered king prawn Singapore noodles and what turned up was completely different. There wasn’t a single prawn in sight, and it definitely wasn’t Singapore noodles – just bland, oily noodles with random bits thrown in. It felt like they’d either mixed up the order or just didn’t care. I called them straight away to sort it out, but that made things even worse. The woman on the phone was incredibly rude, barely let me explain, and just dismissed the issue. She refused to offer a replacement or a refund and acted like it was my problem, not theirs. Really disappointing service and even worse customer care. I won’t be ordering from here again.”

“Order just hasn’t arrived. Phone line always busy. Can’t get hold of them. Been nearly 2 hours. Uber eats says food was on the way over an hour ago. No choice but to comment here as i can’t get hold of them any other way. Can’t cancel or get money back. This was supposed to be a nice meal for me and my daughter. Thanks.”

“Ordered £40 worth of food, waited 3 hours for it and then got a notification saying delivery done… was not delivered, no phone call nothing. Tried phoning the restaurant repeatedly for an hour and went straight to voicemail. Won’t give us food and then wouldn’t give us a refund. Not happy and 100% don’t recommend - just wasted all that money for nothing”
