About 1771 Swalwell
1771 Swalwell is an Italian restaurant in Newcastle Upon Tyne, on Hexham Rd, run in the style of an old country pub with live music at weekends. Upstairs, a cocktail bar serves drinks such as the pornstar martini, so a evening can start or finish away from the dining room. The menu starts with spicy meatballs served with bread, and pizzas sit alongside the mains, including the pizza romana and a pepperoni. The chicken dolcelatte comes with thick-cut, hand-cut chips. Tiramisu and lemon Eton mess cover dessert, and Sunday dinners are on offer for a weekend meal. Dogs are welcome, which suits a visit with a pet in tow.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the starters, above all the spicy meatballs and the homemade fishcakes, both described as big enough to be mains. Close behind are the dolcelatte chicken with thick cut chips, the pizzas, the Cajun pasta, and the Sunday roast. Desserts such as the tiramisu and lemon Eton mess draw praise, as do the pornstar and espresso martinis. Reviewers also describe friendly service that leaves them room to eat without interruption, with cutlery and napkins changed after each course, and a terrace that suited a group of six.

“Absolutely gem of a local restaurant, on arrival found staff to be friendly, helpful & attentive taking our order with a lovely atmosphere. Pizzas were amazing, better than anywhere else. Also tried other dishes from menu including Sunday roast and all 10/10, tasty, decent food and I always come back for more.”

“It's been a while since we've been but I was shocked at how much they've put the prices up by. I understand that prices have gone up everywhere, but steaks have gone up from £28 to £38. I don't even pay that much at premium restaurants in town, and the steaks weren't cooked properly. Potato skins starters have gone up from £4.20 to £6.95 pizzas are £3 more, pasta dishes at least £2 more. They're now charging premium prices for a local restaurant, and sadly the decor, ambience and food doesn't match the prices they now command. The foods nice, but not worth the prices they now charge.”

“What a shame! One of our favourite restaurants for special family occasions has massively increased their prices. Steak night has gone up from £21.95 to £39.95. Nearly double! A meal for 2 has jumped up from aprox £50 to £85. For a party of about 13 of us that's far too much. Lovely food but unfortunately we'll be going elsewhere in future.”

“My husband and I had dinner here on 15/10/25. Starters: Spicy meatballs Homemade fishcakes Mains Pizza romana Dolcelatte chicken Deserts Tiramisu Lemon Eaton mess Drinks Pornstar martini Expresso martini The meatballs were tender and juicy. The sauce was flavourful without being too spicy. It had a creamy texture and tasted fresh and delicious. The bread that came with it had an amazing texture and was delicious. The fishcakes were amazing. Clearly home made, perfectly seasoned and delicious wirh a beautiful texture. I always thought I didn't like fishcakes. Apparently I just never had good ones. Both starters were big enough to be mains. The romana pizza was delicious, ingredients clearly fresh and very tasty. Not the best pizza I ever had but certainly a good one. The dolcelatte chicken was delicious. The sauce was creamy and had perfectly seasoned. The chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy. The chips were thick cut with a crispy outside and fluffy middle. Some of the best chips I have ever had. The Eaton mess was lovely, massive portions of ice-cream with perfectly crispy meringue pieces, a mountain of cream and topped with a zingy lemon sauce. The tiramisu was heaven on a wooden board. Creamy, delicious, intense, chocolate. Words escape me for how good this was. We had a pornstar martini and an expresso martini. The drinks was perfectly balanced and generous sizes. Simple, elegant, beautiful. We went in without a reservation dressed in hoodies and trainers since this was not a planned meal and yet we were still greeted warmly, with enthusiasm and seated quickly despite it being a little busy. The restaurant is beautiful and cozy with a family feel. The service was impeccable. We were served by multiple people, everyone equaly as respecful, friendly, enthusiastic and accommodating. Nobody hovered over us so we never felt rushed. We were left to enjoy our meals without having to wait too long for our plates to be clearned and the next course to be served. Accompaniments were offered when appropriate without any upselling or preassure. The prices were decent especially considering the quality and quantity of the food and drinks. We paid £78.20 before tip. I would recommend everyone try this restaurant. Honestly everything was impressive from greeting to leaving and although they are quite far from us and we were only in the area for an appointment, I plan on going back when we can.”
