Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, praised for properly cooked beef and lamb that was not fatty, Yorkshire puddings "as they should be" and plenty of cauliflower cheese. Close behind is the steak, mentioned across several visits, alongside starters such as pork cheeks, scampi, and a chicken and rabbit roulade. Desserts like the rhubarb crumble and the posset also earn praise. Diners describe the service as friendly and attentive, and several mention a lovely atmosphere and a pub garden by the river. Two families describe celebrations, a mother's 80th birthday and a wedding reception, where staff accommodated health needs, allergies and vegan requests. The complaints are small. One diner found the roast potatoes neither fluffy inside nor crisped outside, another felt the steak needed chips, and one was initially disappointed by a small starter before the flavour won them over. One reviewer filled up on the ciabatta starter and could not finish the roast.

“Had an excellent meal on Friday night. Started was quite small and we were initially disappointed but the flavour was fabulous. We had steak (I think it needed chips) with salad also lovely. Then the posset dessert was so good. It’s been a long time since we’ve been out and all three courses for both of us were excellent. Well done Hartley Arms.”

“A lovely country pub close to Newbury. We came here without a bokking but were immediately given a table. The menu was standard pub food and we had some good dinners nicely served.”

“We recently visited this pub to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday, and I honestly can’t thank the team enough. My mother has had a difficult year with her health, and the staff went above and beyond to make the day truly special for her. They were incredibly accommodating to her needs—nothing was too much trouble—and the level of care and kindness shown meant so much to us as a family. The service throughout was excellent: warm, attentive, and genuine. The food was also lovely and made the occasion even more enjoyable. Everything came together perfectly, and it turned into a celebration we’ll always remember. Thank you for making such an important day so special.”
