Customer Review Summary

Reviewers are split on service, but the food draws the most praise, led by the roasts, with pigs in blankets available year round, and a sharing Camembert in hot crusty bread that one diner called delicious. Others describe pub grub as well cooked, in good portions, and one pairs a Cosmo with a Sunday roast that could use more gravy. Several single out friendly, polite servers, and one group of eight praised a server who stayed attentive through a long birthday dinner. The complaints are specific and recurring. Two reviewers report tough or overcooked steak, and in one case the waiter asked to see the cut middle before replacing it. Others describe slow service: a birthday table waited a long stretch for drinks, got a jug of water with no glasses, was charged for a full bottle after a missed glass of wine, and waited again for the bill. One reviewer says a waiter repeatedly hinted at a tip at the till and remarked on it afterward, and that the pub blocked a follow-up email. Some mention that ordering by QR code speeds things up.

“I wrote a review saying how awful the experience was especially the male waiter, they told me to contact them so I did and they blocked my email. If you think they did anything to help the situation you would be wrong, they are happy with how he was treating us and how he made us uncomfortable.”

“Came here for a meal as it came up with a 25% discount on out taste card. Drinks and food were a little pricey especially as there is a Wetherspoons next door, but it was definitely worth paying extra. The food was amazing. The sharing Camembert inside hot crusty bread was absolutely delicious. Mains were also great. Very tasty meals. Drinks were a little expensive, nearly £10 for a small rose. Would highly recommend though and helps when there’s a discount.”

“We had a birthday meal for my brother here. Our group of eight arrived at 18:00 for a meal at 07:30. We were giving a table immediately and enjoyed drinks and our meal until 23:00. We were attended to mainly by India, who was excellent and informative. We had a great night and the price for eight people was quite reasonable. I would like to thank India and her team once again for a lovely evening.”

“We had a birthday dinner at Elephant at the Market. The food was delicious, the service was ATROCIOUS. Nobody came to check on us despite 30min passing and the restaurant not being busy at all. First they just brought the jug of water, no glasses. Impossible to catch anyone’s eye. It was another 15min before anyone bothered to ask for what drinks we wanted and another 15 before they brought them. I assume the food prep takes a while because it’s made fresh. But then they forgot to bring us ketchup which I had to get myself. Then they forgot about our glass of wine and then they charged us for the whole bottle. We waited another 30min for anyone to come to us with the bill. Not the greatest evening I’ve had.”

“When we initially turned up the waiter (with the man bun) was nice and showed us to our table and offered us drinks etc. When our other guests arrived and we started to order, we all wanted the pan fried chicken to which we were only then told they only had 2 in stock, the restaurant was very quiet and it was a week night so I was shocked at the limited availability of a popular meat choice on the menu, considering the menu isn’t particularly large. Apart from one check in and drink refill we were almost ignored most of the night, my friends steak was over cooked and incredibly chewy, I called over the waiter to tell him and instead of immediately rectifying he asked her to cut it open so he could see the middle of it. He then brought her out a fresh meal but it felt like we had to prove the steak wasn’t cooked as she’d asked. We had to seek our own menus and call the waiter back over to order puddings, as he didn’t come over himself to offer us any. When it was time to pay he asked us to go to the till and walked off to the bar. We followed him and he asked us multiple times if we were paying more than the bill, initially not understanding that he was hinting for a tip, we replied no we were just paying the bill. As each of us paid he kept going on about how we weren’t paying more than the bill, and saying he couldn’t add a service charge on the bar till, but as there was no service charge added to the bill we couldn’t understand why he kept saying this to us over and over again, making us feel really uncomfortable. As we finished paying he turned around to the other waiter behind the bar and made the comment ‘no service charge from them then’. He doesn’t know our circumstances so he should t make a comment. All 4 of us have just had our first babies and it was our first meal out together as a friendship group of an evening and something we were all really looking forward to, however the waiter has now put a negative memory to what we was hoping to be a lovely meal out. Being on maternity leave, money isn’t something we have bundles of, but regardless of the circumstance, feeling pressured to pay a service charge was completely inappropriate, uncomfortable and to be honest just rude when the service wasn’t satisfactory anyway.”
