About The Tor Cafe
The Tor Cafe is a cafe in Matlock on Derby Rd, where the build-your-own breakfast lets each plate be put together to order, with Lincolnshire sausage among the choices. Tea comes in big teapots with mismatched mugs, and the blend is Yorkshire tea. The menu includes vegan and vegetarian options alongside meat dishes, so mixed groups can find something each. Orders are placed at the counter. The space is small, with a back room and extra seating upstairs. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers come for breakfast, especially the build your own option, with one pair ordering an omelette with mushroom and cheese alongside a standard fry up, and another praising a massive vegan breakfast. Lincolnshire sausage, hash browns, beans and Yorkshire tea in big pots with mismatched mugs get specific mentions. Reviewers also single out the wide range of vegan and vegetarian dishes, generous portions, reasonable prices and a small, cosy space with a back room and garden. Several call the staff friendly or enthusiastic, and one notes dogs are welcome, with a greyhound sharing bacon and sausage. Smaller gripes include tinned tomatoes on the vegan plate and a noisy table beside the counter, which one reviewer says is best avoided. The sharpest complaints concern slow, disorganised service: long waits for breakfast, wrong orders delivered, an iced coffee that tasted of no coffee, and greasy, overcooked plates. One reviewer says a greasy breakfast came back with the grease poured off and beans added instead of a fresh replacement.

“Love this place! Small - though deceiving as there’s a back room and small garden too! Very friendly staff and customers. Highly recommend”

“The food was amazing and the service was really good. The young female server was lovely and had very good people skills, deserves a raise. The hygiene was okay. Prices are very reasonable.”

“Where do I start? When you first arrive the large menu looks appetizing and reasonably priced. Then you start to realise the reality. Firstly the 2 young female servers which clearly do not hold a hygiene standard between them spent all their time comparing boyfriends rather than serving customers at the till. Neither wore aprons but instead shorts that showed far to much cheek and love bites and the other who had difficulty keeping her large attributes in her skimpy top (which was covered in dirty marks). Not the impression you expect for a catering establishment.nor hygenic. All the tables had dirty plates waiting to be cleared away and were not touched in the 1½ hours we spent waiting for our breakfast. Certainly not enough staff for the number of tables and no experienced lead evident to guide and lead them. Can't remember the number of times orders were delivered wrong or they forgot which table the orders were for (even with numbered spoons). The chef was overworked In a cramped kitchen but what came out eventually was hardly edible. MOULD on the toast that was instantly returned and never even received a 'sorry or any apology'. When the breakfast did eventually arrive it was greasy, overcooked and hardly appetizing. At least one couple walked out fed up of waiting and wish we had too.”

“AWFUL PLACE ! If I could score this cafe zero, I would. We arrived, ordered two breakfasts and two drinks. I ordered at the counter - it took the young girl about 3 minutes to come to me as she needed to finish chatting with her colleague first (not about work). We waited around half an hour for the drinks to arrive - my iced coffee did not taste of coffee at all, even after I asked for an extra shot. The breakfast took 45 mins to arrive. When they did, my partners toast had MOULD on it. The girl replaced it - no apology whatsoever. The breakfast was greasy and awful. The young waitresses are rude - they are also inappropriately dressed for work (shorts so shorts they were barely worth bothering with). Tables were left dirty and uncleared the whole time we were there. Enter at your peril - this place is a health and hygiene risk. We will be reporting it to the Food Standards Agency”

“I was extremely disappointed with my experience. The breakfast was of a very poor standard and, unfortunately, was not edible due to the excessive amount of grease. I raised this concern with a member of staff, who took the plate away, poured off some of the grease, and returned the same meal rather than offering a freshly prepared replacement. The quality of the ingredients also appeared to be below standard, with the sausages and bacon seeming particularly low quality. Cleanliness throughout the premises was concerning; the floor was covered with crumbs and food debris, creating an unhygienic impression. In addition, I observed bread being stored on the floor, which raises serious concerns regarding food hygiene practices. The crockery was also noticeably stained and appeared unclean. Customer service was equally disappointing. Staff members came across as dismissive and uninterested in addressing customer concerns. Overall, this was a very poor experience and not one I would recommend. The place needs closing down! food quality, cleanliness, hygiene standards, and customer service. Shocking!!!! 🤢🤢🤢🤢 To clarify, this is not a scam, as the owner has stated below. However, I feel it is important to highlight serious concerns regarding the food quality, hygiene standards, and customer service provided. No refund or appropriate resolution was offered despite the circumstances. I was initially served a meal that was covered in grease. Rather than preparing a fresh replacement, the grease was simply poured off the plate, beans were added, and the same food was returned to me. In my view, this is unacceptable and raises legitimate concerns about food preparation practices and hygiene standards. I would encourage the business to review its food handling procedures, staff training, and customer service approach to help prevent similar experiences for other customers. I was not looking for special treatment—only a meal prepared to a reasonable standard and an appropriate response when the issue was raised.”
