Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for breakfast, praising the full English, eggs benedict and a brunch of thick sliced bread and proper bacon, with one suggesting the waffles with bacon. Afternoon tea is close behind, from a baby shower for 20+ guests to a couple who enjoyed the sandwiches and cakes and took a few home. Also mentioned are chai lattes (one reviewer found four varieties), a tiramisu latte, a large coffee and walnut cake, and a ploughman's platter with Black Bomber cheese and pork pie. Several like the free water jugs, and one reviewer with autism valued the clear instructions to wait to be seated and order at the counter. Staff are mostly described as friendly. One reviewer, however, describes a dietary request handled badly. A staff member questioned whether an egg and nut requirement was a real allergy, the manager said the kitchen could not accommodate such requests, and no apology followed. Another reviewer said staff went through the menu for a nut allergy. The unhappy reviewer was offered a refund for everyone's meals.

“A lovely cafe, we had coffee and cake in the afternoon. A nice atmosphere. Plenty if choice. Highly recommend”

“WARNING TO ANYONE THAT HAS AN ALLERGY. Should have read the other 1 star reviews before we came in because they’re all the same. When telling the member of staff behind the counter that the food was for someone with an egg and nut allergy we were asked if egg and nuts would kill them. When we responded “no but they would be extremely ill” we were told that they therefore had an intolerance because it wasn’t life threatening. This is obviously incorrect and very concerning for a food establishment. I then spoke to the manager to give feedback on the member of staff who clearly wasn’t trained properly but the manager asked us the same set of questions. After a bit of a discussion on what defined an allergy we were told we should have spoken to the manager first despite the menu saying ‘tell a member of our team’. The manager then went on to say that they don’t serve people with allergies because the kitchen is too busy to clean down which raised even bigger concerns about the place. We were told that she would have to refund that meal and she offered to refund everyone’s but we were short on time so the person with the allergy said they would sit there and watch everyone else eat. There was never an apology or an acknowledgment of how bad the experience was. I’ll copy here the Cambridge dictionary definition of an allergy in the hope that this place reads it: An allergy is a medical condition where your body reacts badly to a substance that is normally harmless to most people. When you have an allergy, your body's defense system treats that safe thing like a dangerous germ. [1, 2, 3, 4]”

“Incredible! Fantastic brunch with THICK sliced bread, proper bacon and a proper tea in bone china. Great hub with a really lovely friendly atmosphere. Hannah and Abbey made us feel so looked after. Great staff. Great energy”

“We have just eaten lunch at this delightful little place. Very busy but able to squeeze us in. The lovely waitress explained that there was a wait for food, which was fine for us. Fabulous menu, with lots of choices of good and drinks. The first place that I've had the choice of four different types of Chai Latte 😊 Our food was delicious, I chose the Lebanese flatbread with hallumi, absolutely lovely. My hubby had a wiltshire ham, mushroom, onion and cheese toasty. He said it was great. We didn't have cakes or desserts, but they did look delicious and fresh. Loved that there was a water station where you can help yourself to fresh, cool, drinking water. The decor is beautiful, seating good, clean, and spacious restrooms too. We would definitely recommend and return when in Ashbourne again. Well done, to The Little Shed 👏”

“So well organised, lovely food and staff. I have autism and it can be really overwhelming in places like cafes where you’re not totally sure on where to go/what to do. Clear instructions (wait to be seated, then order at counter). I loved the different water jugs available for free! Very refreshing and add a little something extra. The building has such character and balances beauty with history really well. The food is delicious and equally stunning! I had the tiramisu latte (lush!!!) and the cooked breakfast — so lovely, will be coming again!”
