About New Yorker Dark Kitchen

New Yorker Dark Kitchen is an American diner restaurant in Manchester, on School Ln, and every dish on the menu is halal. The kitchen builds its menu around "Dirty" dishes, which gives halal diners a full run of American comfort food. Dirty Poutine is topped with fried chicken strips, and Dirty Chicken + Waffle pairs chicken with a waffle. Beef and chicken burgers and hot dogs fill out the mains. On the drinks side, the milkshakes include Premium Candy Shakes. Guests order and pay at the counter before the food arrives, and the restaurant runs largely on self service.

Customer Review Summary

Dirty chicken and waffle is the dish reviewers push hardest, with one urging others to try it and another naming it among their menu picks alongside the NY cheesy fries. Close behind are the macaroni cheese burger, the mac and cheese, the chewy waffle dessert and the milkshakes, from candy shakes to banana and Nutella. Wings are described as crunchy with tender meat, and the dirty poutine with fried chicken strips drew praise. Hot dogs split opinion, loved by one family but called too sour with a flavourless sausage by another. The recurring complaint is the burgers. Reviewers describe dry beef patties and a dry chicken burger, and one says the buns let them down. Sloppy fries were a modest portion with basic mince, and the spicy sauce on boneless chicken was called tasteless. A couple of reviewers found the room chilly, and one reports a long wait for food. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one reviewer felt for the single worker covering the counter, drinks, desserts and tables alone.

“The New Yorker offers a 'get comfy' kind of environment, with a relaxed atmosphere, and screens to showcase what’s on offer while you wait. What impressed us the most was their staff - the most friendliest and helpful staff you'd hope for. They were always up to accommodating our needs while helping with food choices. The New Yorker is not your ordinary food joint, making it an American experience worth taking. Menu Recommendation Drinks - Premium Candy Shakes Sides - NY Cheesy Fries Mains - Dirty Chicken + Waffle Desserts - Milky Bun”

“The decor was excellent, but the food wasn't as good as I was expecting. I was hyped after hearing the opinion of one of my friends and I was left fairly disappointed. The buns really let the burgers down. If they had used better quality bread, the food would have been 4*. On the plus side, the chips were nice and crunchy. The restrooms were also out of service, which was another negative point against NYD.”

“I had the Dirty Poutine (Poutine with fried chicken strips on top. pictured) and a milkshake. The food and the drink were really nice. The service was quick and the staff were welcoming. Didn't have to wait too long for my food either. Reasonably priced as well. The place looks small on the outside but actually has a fair amount of tables and room. No complaints.”

“When here with my wife and 2 year old. Nice food. We love the hot dogs, The burger is ok, No complaint there. The reason we don't give 5 start because our table is dirty. Its all sticky. No one bother to wipe the table. We have to do it ourself with a baby wipe.”

“What a disappointment. Tried twice coming for lunch both times the place was closed (during opening hours) how unprofessional! Third time lucky three of us went to have lunch. I was excited and very very hungry! Two of us ordered the beef burgers, one of us ordered the boneless chicken and we got wings for the table - told you we were hungry! Unfortunately the patties were both dry and unimaginative, no depth of flavour, no juicy meat at all. the chicken was not seasoned in any exciting way and the horrible "spicy" sauce smothered all over it lacked any real taste. We managed to eat most of if as we felt bad paying so much and don't like to leave food. Thankfully the milkshake was delightful but hard to go wrong with banana and Nutella blended up! The most annoying thing about this place is the price! £37 for three people to eat fast food which isn't even that tasty! It's all the little extras that add up. I feel that the menu is deliberately designed to charge the customer as much as possible. I don't mind paying for good food. Seriously the quality needs to increase asap! I think I'm going to give this place a try one more time and I'll order the chicken waffle next time but I'm not hopeful. If you want spicy fried chicken there's plenty of cheap establishments that do it better. 99p to make something spicy is a con especially if it just means you add an industrial tasting spicy sauce on top of something.”
