About Circolo Popolare Manchester

Circolo Popolare Manchester is an Italian restaurant in Manchester and Big Mamma's first restaurant in the North of England. It is a 280-cover trattoria with a Sicilian theme, set in the new St Michael's development and clad in jasmine. Walls of bottles line the room, with strings of lights overhead, and the tables are arranged irregularly. The sharing menu covers grilled fresh British seafood and Neapolitan-style pizzas, alongside pasta dishes such as the crab pasta and mafaldine with pesto or truffle. Seats are available at the bar for those who want a drink and a plate without a full table. A live DJ and entertainment take over later in the evening.

Customer Review Summary

Pasta draws the most praise, with reviewers singling out the crab pasta, the ragù, and the mafaldine with pesto or truffle. Close behind are the oversized lemon desserts, a lemon meringue, tart and pie all called showstoppers or highlights, along with pistachio gelato and focaccia. Pizzas earn praise for blistered Neapolitan crusts, though one found the margherita base slightly too chewy. Portions split opinion: one reviewer called them huge, while others found the pasta, steak and salad small. One table received undercooked mafaldine that staff apologised for and handled well, and a crab pasta arrived with cold and hot patches. Drinks drew complaints for tiny measures and a cola missing from the menu, and the menu font was hard to read in low light. Reviewers also like the bottle wall, the live DJ and the friendly floor staff, and one suggests booking a table. For one family's birthday celebration, the tiramisu arrived with a candle from the staff.

“Thank you to all the staff for looking after us. This is a wonderful restaurant with a truly upscale atmosphere. We ordered the Torre di Prodotti to share, and it was outstanding. Every element was full of flavour, beautifully presented, and perfectly prepared. For our mains, we chose the Mafaldine al Pesto and Le Nostre Mafaldine al Tartufo. Both dishes had beautiful flavours, but unfortunately the mafaldine was undercooked. It was too firm and crunchy rather than pleasantly al dente. We mentioned this to the staff, who were understanding, apologetic, and handled the situation professionally. To finish, we had the lemon meringue dessert—wow! It was a real showstopper and the perfect way to end the meal. Despite the issue with the pasta, we still had a lovely evening thanks to the excellent service and overall dining experience. We will definitely be back again sooner or later.”

“The service was good, and the atmosphere was very nice. The wall of drinks was quite a nice feature. The toilets were very nicely decorated. The menu was quite fancy to a fault, making it hard to read in the low light, even for young eyes, due to the font choice. The portion size for the steak and salad felt small, and the drink was terribly tiny. The salad felt lacking. The pizzas were amazing, and tasted just as good as they looked. The dessert menu was overly grandiose, with a lot of pistachio or nut based options. The Lemon tart was quite nice and very flashy in size. The red wine we chose was smooth and delightful, although the white wine was too bitter for our liking. The price was quite good for the mains, but extortionate for the drinks. £4.50 for 0.2l of coke zero was horrid l, especially as I couldn't find it listed on the menu beforehand. The size of the salad did not constitute it being priced at £5.50.”

“Really pleasantly surprised when I walked in! A definite treat for the eyes, as it's beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. It was a rushed visit as I had 45 minutes to eat before rushing to the optician. While the restaurant was fully booked, I was able to get a seat at the bar where I met the lovely bar staff. I ordered the crab pasta 4.5*. While it was perfectly aldente and tasty, parts were cold, tepid, and hot. I like my food hot throughout. Service 5*. No complaints! The guys at the bar were professional and helpful. Ambiance 5+++*. Definitely stole the show!!! A revisit when I have more time.”

“Circolo Popolare Manchester is not merely a restaurant; it is a stage where Italian culinary tradition meets theatrical flair. From the moment you enter, the atmosphere is immersive — walls lined with countless bottles, strings of lights overhead, and bursts of colour everywhere. The décor is exuberant yet tasteful, creating a sense of celebration without tipping into chaos. Even at full capacity, the space feels lively rather than crowded, thanks to its deliberately irregular table arrangement that adds spontaneity to the dining experience.Service here is exemplary. Staff are plentiful, smiling, and attentive, striking that rare balance between efficiency and warmth. You are guided through the evening with genuine hospitality, never rushed, never neglected. The food is where Circolo Popolare truly earns its reputation. Pasta dishes arrive silky and perfectly al dente, sauces layered with depth — whether it’s a slow‑cooked ragù or a bright tomato coulis. The pizzas are unmistakably Neapolitan: blistered crusts, airy interiors, and toppings that respect tradition while offering creativity. Starters such as burrata al pesto or smoky stracciatella showcase indulgence without heaviness, while mains carry aromas that speak of careful sourcing and patient cooking. Portions are generous, designed for sharing, yet plated with refinement. Desserts, often arriving in dramatic size, are unapologetically indulgent — a fitting finale to a meal that celebrates abundance. This is not the cheapest restaurant in Manchester, but the pricing feels fair for the quality of ingredients, the artistry of the cooking, and the sheer spectacle of the setting. It is dining as experience, not just sustenance.Circolo Popolare Manchester deserves its near‑perfect ratings. It is a place where atmosphere, service, and food converge to create something memorable. For anyone who values Italian cuisine presented with flair and authenticity, this restaurant is a destination worth revisiting. Final note, you would be well adviced to book a table as you might be disappointed if you just turn up.”

“I have been meaning to try this restaurant in London but it’s always booked out and I was in town for work and decided to try my luck! I’m so glad I did because it was such a delicious meal and well worth the amount I paid! I got the raaghuu pasta and pistachio gelato suggested by Paulo and John Marco and it was exactly what I needed. The service was amazing and Paulo even explained to me the concept of the restaurant being similar to Sardinia’s feel. Food was spectacular and vibes were incredible. I would absolutely recommend this to families, couples and solo visitors (just like myself).”
