About Urban Orient

Urban Orient is a Vietnamese restaurant at 74 Westow St in London, serving traditional small plates and noodle dishes. The menu pairs pho and bun hue with charsiu, so a single order can span more than one style of cooking. Vermicelli bowls sit alongside the soups, and the dumplings come filled with chicken, prawn, or pork and prawn as sui mai. The restaurant is fully licensed, and guests who prefer their own bottles can bring drinks in for a corkage charge.

Customer Review Summary

Salt and pepper squid and chicken dumplings draw the praise, with one diner calling the dumplings smooth as silk and two mentioning friendly staff. Long-time regulars describe a decline, though: smaller portions, tiny and chewy squid, Bun Hue prawn that tasted off, lukewarm takeaways, a beer that wasn't cold, and higher prices. One regular could not reach the manager by phone.

“Been going to Urban Orient since 2010 and it has steadily declined in value and taste. We ordered tonight from Deliveroo and every meal was disappointing, didnt taste like it used to, poorer quality of ingredients used, soups full of cabbage to bulk up look, squid has tiny portion and very chewy. Bun Hue prawn tasted completely off. This was the worst meal weve ever had from Urban and we used to love it. We wont be coming back ever again. Sad times”

“I was hesitant to come here, for reasons I don’t know why. Boy am I glad I got past any hesitations I had. We were greeted by a very friendly lady who managed to get us a table on a busy Friday night. Another member of staff took our order, who was just as pleasant as his colleague. They are fully licensed but also let you bring your own drinks in (£4 corkage). We ordered summer rolls, chicken dumplings, salt and pepper squid, pork and prawn sui mai with the intention of ordering a main course afterwards. The food was sensational and would go as far as saying the best chicken dumplings I’ve ever had. They were smooth as silk and melted in your mouth, the filling was so flavoursome. The squid was also up there as one of the best I’ve had. Instead of ordering a main course, I ordered more chicken dumplings and a portion of salt and pepper prawns which were also delicious. I’m so glad I decided to give this place a go, it’s quirky but inviting and the staff are friendly and efficient and serving exceptional authentic food. Can’t wait to go back!”

“We love the delicious food at Urban Orient and have eaten in and regularly order takeaways from this restaurant. We always order the Singapore vermicelli. Salt and pepper squid, prawn dumplings and summer rolls. Unfortunately the last 3 times we have ordered the portion sizes have been greatly reduced (they used to be so generous) and feel like something has changed for the worse which is really disappointing. Our takeaways have also arrived recently just about lukewarm. What used to be a delicious and affordable meal now is now expensive for what it is. I’ve tried a couple of times to call the restaurant to speak to the manager to have an honest and meaningful conversation but have been unsuccessful in getting through to anyone. It would be great if Urban Orient could get back on track as this used to be one of our favourite restaurants in Crystal Palace!”

“This restaurant made it to my "never again" list. We ordered the beef garlic pho, duck egg noodle soup, and chicken vermicelli. The food was simply bad—badly cooked, the ingredients tasted off, and none of us could finish even half of our meals. To make matters worse, the beer we ordered wasn't cold. We were told this was due to fridge issues, which they absolutely should have informed us of before we ordered. On top of that, the bathrooms were not clean and the hand wash basin had no soap. This restaurant charges the prices of a premium casual restaurant, but delivers the quality of a washed-up cafeteria. Avoid.”
