About AngloThai

AngloThai is a Thai restaurant on Seymour Place in London, where the tasting menu is the only format, served at both lunch and dinner. The kitchen pairs Thai flavours with produce from the British Isles, using almost entirely British ingredients. Cornish mussels arrive with ancient grains in place of rice, and Brixham crab comes on a Coconut Ash Cracker. Guests sit at a counter, and the team introduces each dish as it is served. The bar offers cocktails such as the White Pepper Martini, and the wine list draws on independent growers from across Europe. Reservations are required. Downstairs, Baan is a 16-seat private dining room that suits groups.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the tasting menu's pairing of Thai flavours with British produce, and the crab on crackers, in one account Brixham crab with a coconut ash cracker, is the course named first. The duck and the pork, including a fermented barley pork with shrimp paste and ginger, follow closely, while one diner calls a veal cheek with five spice the best dish of the night. Desserts also get named, among them a strawberry, coconut and pandan shaved ice and a roti dessert. Spicing is described as bold but balanced, and the staff are repeatedly called friendly and knowledgeable. The criticism is consistent in kind. A few felt the cooking was closer to contemporary fine dining than Thai, one found many dishes tasted alike, and others noted long gaps between courses, crunchy elements overpowering some plates, and a wine list short on affordable bottles. One birthday diner found a personalised card waiting on the table.

“Exceptional food and service. I eat at many fine dining establishments and was particularly impressed by my meal here. A pleasing combination of textures and flavours which complemented, rather than competed. Spicing was spot on, bold but caressing rather than punching. The pork main and “roti” dessert were particularly memorable. Service was friendly and informative without ever being intrusive. I look forward to returning!”

“I recently visited Anglothai, and it was such an enjoyable experience. What really drew me in was my curiosity about their unique approach to Thai cooking and flavours expressed through British ingredients. The moment I walked in, I noticed the good vibe; everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, and the atmosphere was both lively and relaxed. The concept feels creative and modern, yet it doesn’t lose the intensity, aromatics, and spice that make Thai food so exciting. The service was friendly and attentive throughout my visit. Overall, it was a joyful experience, and I left feeling happy I stopped by. If you’re interested in trying something new with great service and a welcoming atmosphere, I’d definitely recommend checking this place out. We began with a seafood broth that had Thai basil, chilli, and lemongrass. It looked simple, but the aroma was intense and gave a great preview of the flavours ahead. The Carlingford oyster came with sunflower seed brittle and red chilli. It was huge and spicier than I expected. The crunch from the brittle worked really well with the oyster and added more texture than I thought it would.d. Next, we had fermented barley pork with shrimp paste and ginger. The flavour was much bigger than its small size suggested. It was deeply savoury, rich, and had a bit of funk, while the pickled ginger added just the right amount of acidity to balance it. The textures contrasted nicely too. The Cornish mussels with trombetta courgette and pea shoots were another highlight. The mussels were large and perfectly cooked, and the courgette was softer than I expected but paired really well with the broth. The broth itself was amazing rich, aromatic, and just the right amount of spicy. Then came the best dish of the night: veal cheek with five spice and hispi cabbage, served with ancient grains and a green apple salad, easily a 10 out of 10. The veal cheek was incredibly tender and topped with a glossy, delicious sauce, with squash purée on the side. Surprisingly, the salad that came with it almost stole the spotlight. Green apple, chilli, coriander, and crispy fried mushrooms made a great mix of sweet, tart, aromatic, spicy, and umami flavours. The mushrooms gave just the right crispy, savoury touch next to the fresh crunch of the apple. Using ancient grains instead of rice was a smart British twist. Altogether, it was outstanding. Anglothai handles spice really well. The food isn’t just hot for the sake of it. Instead, the heat builds slowly and shows up at the end of each bite. You taste the aromatics, sweetness, acidity, and savouriness first, and then the chilli comes in but never gets too strong. I had a ginger beer with the meal, and it was a perfect match. Before dessert, we had a course with strawberry, coconut, and pandan. The strawberry shaved ice with coconut milk was really refreshing, fruity, light, and just what I wanted after the rich and spicy dishes before. It was actually my favourite of the two desserts. The last dessert was made with Thai tea, buckwheat, and milk, including Thai tea ice cream and a buckwheat component. It was very good, but for me, the strawberry and pandan course was just unbeatable. The service was friendly and helpful the whole time, and the timing of each course was just right. Even with so many dishes, I left feeling satisfied but not overly full, which I really appreciate in a tasting menu. What stands out about Anglothai is that the British ingredient swaps don’t feel like tricks. Using sunflower seeds instead of peanuts, ancient grains instead of rice, and local British produce like Cornish mussels all fit naturally into the dishes. The food still tastes clearly inspired by Thailand, just made with ingredients from closer to home. The food was great, the concept was truly interesting, the staff were lovely, and the atmosphere was relaxed. I’d come back just for the veal cheek alone.”

“AngloThai, London, England. This one Michelin star restaurant is the creation of a husband and wife John and Desiree Chantarasak. The couple previously did a series of supper clubs and pop-ups. The restaurant supposedly blends Thai flavours with British ingredients creating a fusion style of cuisine. The offering is one tasting menu only. This is more convenient for the restaurant than the customers. Few dishes hit the mark particularly the dessert but most were just ok. Almost every dish had a similar taste. The spices and cooking techniques used have no resemblance to Thai cuisine. Having said that, AngloThai has clearly found an audience, being very busy even on a Tuesday evening. Service was polished and attentive although the intervals between the meals were long. Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3/5 Average PPP £ 158”

“One of the best meals I've ever had! The tasting menu is an explosion of flavours, and every course was exceptional. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and genuinely make the whole experience feel special. I loved how everything is designed around the food and the overall experience, right down to Asian music in the restrooms, which was a really nice touch. Every detail has been carefully designed and thought through. I'll definitely be back.”

“Anglothai is an outstanding dining experience and fully deserves its Michelin star. What impressed me most was the extraordinary attention to every single dish. You can clearly feel the amount of research, refinement and craftsmanship behind each preparation. The Brixham crab with Exmoor caviar and Coconut Ash Cracker perfectly represents the chef's philosophy: technically impressive, visually stunning and beautifully balanced. Another memorable course was the welcome consommé, crystal clear, deeply flavorful and packed with umami. It prepared the palate with remarkable elegance. The smoked aubergine was also exceptional, one of the deepest and most memorable flavors of the entire meal. The duck breast was cooked flawlessly, although I personally found it closer to an outstanding international fine dining dish than to one with a strong Thai identity. This is perhaps my only real criticism: I was expecting a more pronounced Thai influence. Rather than a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant, I experienced an exceptional contemporary fine dining restaurant with Thai inspiration. It's a subtle but important distinction. Another minor point is the use of crunchy elements, which in a few dishes, such as the noodles, the tomato course and, to some extent, the final dessert, slightly overshadowed the other flavors. The only genuinely disappointing aspect was the counter where I was seated. It felt noticeably sticky to the touch, and in a restaurant of this caliber I would have expected it to be impeccably clean. This detail matters even more because the cutlery is placed directly on the counter throughout the meal. That said, the menu is remarkably coherent, the technical execution is outstanding, and the value for money is exceptional for London. A restaurant that is absolutely worth visiting, with a very distinctive culinary identity. Congratulations to the chef and the entire team.”

Highlights

“AngloThai is a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant in Marylebone, London, from husband-and-wife team John and Desiree Chantarasak. Chef John leans on the techniques that define Thai cooking, fermenting, grilling, and balancing fragrant herbs with sour, salt and smoky chilli, working almost entirely with produce from the British Isles. Tasting menus are served at lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday. Downstairs sits Baan, our 16-seat private dining room, named after the Thai word for home. Desiree's wine list champions a new generation of independent European growers, with a focus on craft and provenance. A short walk from Marble Arch and Edgware Road. In partnership with MJMK Restaurants.”
