About The Anchor & Hope

On The Cut in London, The Anchor & Hope serves a Modern British menu that changes daily, set in a wooden-floored pub hung with colourful art. The room splits into a bar section and a separate dining area, and a cheese soufflé recurs on the menu alongside dishes such as Shetland Mussels Mariniere and grilled Tillingham leeks with sauce gribiche. Wine is poured by the glass, bottle, or carafe. Reservations are recommended, and table service typically means a wait for a seat even with a booking. The step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, dogs are welcome inside, and patio tables out front on The Cut give the option of eating outdoors. The location makes it a workable stop for a meal before a show at the Young Vic or one of the other nearby theatres. The kitchen runs to 63 dishes across the menu.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often circle back to the lamb, whether it's the lamb shank praised as cooked for hours until tender, or the smaller lamb starter some found petite for its price, and the dish reportedly sells out quickly enough that diners advise ordering it as soon as seated. Close behind are the cheese souffle, mentioned repeatedly and generally well liked though one visitor found it under seasoned for their taste, and standout mains like hake, halibut, sole with wild garlic, and octopus. The beer and wine selection draws specific praise, with several taps and a notably long wine list. Desserts split opinion: the flourless chocolate cake, apple tart Tatin, and cheesecake earn enthusiasm, while one reviewer describes a "deconstructed" rhubarb dessert as barely assembled and another found a crab-topped sourdough starter tiny and overpriced, with cold cauliflower that the restaurant later removed from the bill. Price draws recurring complaints, several calling portions small for the cost. Service is consistently described as attentive, with staff noted for accommodating allergies, sourcing extra cuttlefish for a regular, and offering a bar seat during a wait for a table.

“Nice building and good atmosphere, with friendly service. Unfortunately, the food felt seriously overpriced for what it was. The main was excellent and a decent portion, while I found the dessert a bit disappointing. The soggy fries and pile of lettuce on a far too small plate didn't help either. A nice enough place overall, but sadly not worth the price tag.”
  • Stuart Helmer
“Brilliant place. Gorgeous food, well made cocktails, a great wine list, perfect service and a relaxed but refined atmosphere. Recommended.”
  • Brad Peters
“Excellent. I was tempted to order a second entre if I weren't pressed for time.”
  • Ian Winterbotham
“I enjoy this place because the menu consists mainly of seasonal items and changes constantly. The casual nature means you can share dishes with friends and choose from a unique wine list. Always surprising and interesting.”
  • Shahid Olakara Musthafa
“A London institution for a reason! The Anchor & Hope delivers that perfect, rare balance of a buzzy, unpretentious pub atmosphere with Michelin-quality food. The menu changes daily, but the quality is consistently excellent. I had the hake, which was cooked to perfection—flaky, fresh, and beautifully seasoned. However, what really stood out was the excellent staff behavior. Despite the restaurant being incredibly busy, the team remained professional, welcoming, and attentive. They manage the fast-paced environment with ease, making you feel well-looked after from the moment you walk in. It’s loud, lively, and authentic—exactly what a great gastropub should be. Highly recommended for a pre-theater meal near the Young Vic or a long, delicious lunch.”
