About Pabellon Venezuelan Food

Pabellon Venezuelan Food is a Venezuelan market stall in the Southbank Centre Food Market, set in a courtyard of food kiosks behind the Royal Festival Hall in London. The stall trades Friday to Sunday only, so weekends are the window to visit. The menu centres on beef arepa and chicken arepa, with the chicken version filled with shredded chicken, avocado, tomato, onion and cheese. Arepa bowls are also on the menu, and sweet potato tempura comes as a side. Garlic sauce and hot sauce are offered with the food. Fillings can be sampled before ordering, which helps when choosing between them, and substitutions are possible, such as black beans in place of avocado and plantain.

Customer Review Summary

The beef arepa is what most reviewers come for, with one calling it spot on and tasty and another saying it recalled a parent's home cooking, filled generously and not greasy. A chicken arepa with slow-cooked spicy chicken, avocado, tomato, onion and cheese also draws praise, and reviewers describe the cheese as generous. Close behind are the sweet potato tempura, called light and crispy with good garlic and hot sauces, though one diner found theirs mostly crispy shell. Several first-time Venezuelan food eaters left satisfied, and reviewers describe the staff as lovely, polite, and willing to let people sample fillings or swap avocado and plantain for black beans. The complaints are specific. One reviewer familiar with the cuisine found the shredded chicken cold, the corn meal thick and bready rather than warm and crisp, and the guacamole not fresh. Another felt the arepas seemed prepackaged and the fillings blended Mexican and Venezuelan styles. A pop-up visitor called the loaded fries with shredded chicken and garlic sauce bland and unseasoned, and threw half away.

“My first time trying Venezuelan food. The taste was decent with a variety of flavors. The quality and portion size were both very good, making it a satisfying experience overall.”

“Arepas were not made fresh; they seemed to come from some sort of prepackaged bag, and this really affected the flavour. The fillings were nice, but it was a mix of Mexican and Venezuelan, and for me it wasn’t authentic enough. I took a friend with me to try Venezuelan food for the first time, and the experience was just okay. They also have some fake display on site of how the food may look, but it’s not very appealing to the eye.”

“I visited their pop-up location outside the The Leadenhall Building in London and was keen to try the loaded fries. I paid £12.50 and had them topped with shredded chicken and garlic sauce. I have never been so disappointed with something that shouldn't be that complex to make flavoursome. The whole thing was bland, the chips had no seasoning and none of the toppings tasted of anything, not even the chicken. I ended up throwing half of it away. For £12.50, and considering they've won an award, I cannot understand how something so simple, can be made that badly.”

“I am well versed in Venezuelan food and was disappointed to find that the shredded chicken for my arepa was served cold and that the corn meal was not warm and crisp, as is traditional, but was cold, thick and bready. The guacamole did not taste fresh. The sweet potato tempera however was amazing with great seasoning and the garlic and hot sauces were so good with them.”
