Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the platter, a three-meat tray with rice and peas, mac and cheese, plantain and mixed vegetables, which several call excellent value and a huge serving. Within it, the curry goat gets the most praise, described as falling off the bone and juicy, while jerk chicken is close behind and one diner calls the bbq chicken the standout. Oxtail, pepper steak and brown stew chicken turn up in other orders, and the beef patty and banana cake get a mention as well. The tropical fruit punch is called refreshing. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming, and the open outdoor kitchen gives the room a homey, smoky feel. The recurring complaints are small. Mac and cheese is called okay and too small a portion for two sharing, the patty was light on beef, and one reviewer wanted more napkins for the bones. Another mentions a bit of a wait and the smoke in the small space, and one suggests getting there early for a seat or taking away. One reviewer was told by locals to come back on a Thursday for ackee and saltfish.

“Maureen's Brixton Kitchen was one of the only reasons why I traveled to London this time. Was super excited to try some authentic Jamaican cuisine and it was insane!! My favorite was the jerk chicken. Everybody was super nice there. Big up Maureen and the whole family!!!”

“One of the best meals I had during two weeks in London. Got the platter, which is an excellent value at £20. Brown stew chicken, curry goat, bbq chicken, rice & peas, mac & cheese, mixed veg and plantain. All well made and delicious, but the bbq chicken was the standout. Phenomenal! If there is any nitpick, it's that the mac & cheese portion is small if sharing two people. This place is busy for a reason, but it is organized, efficient and the staff was very friendly. Some locals told me to come back on a Thursday for ackee and saltfish and indeed I will.”

“My friend and I ate here today - what an experience..! The food was very good. We got a platter each - three meats, rice and peas, macaroni cheese, plantain and vegetables. At £20, this is excellent value for money. I only managed half of my food, and I am still full(11pm). We had a tropical fruit punch which was really refreshing, and the ginger was punchy. The service was excellent - a big shout out to the lovely lady with the fancy eyelashes. The atmosphere was nice. The music and the smoky pans got me all excited for Carnival. Thank you, and we will be back.”

“I decided to try Maureen’s Kitchen after seeing all the great reviews, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I ordered their platter since it seemed to be their most popular dish, and I can see why. The serving size was huge and easily worth the price—excellent value for money. I ordered it as takeaway because I arrived just before closing time, but the staff were still warm, friendly, and accommodating. Great food, generous portions, and excellent service. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their menu!”
