About Bakers Dozen Bakery

Bakers Dozen Bakery is a family-run Jamaican bakery and Caribbean restaurant at 40 New Park Rd in London. The patty range runs past 25 flavours, with lobster, oxtail and jerk chicken among the fillings, all in flaky pastry. Beyond the patties, the kitchen prepares hot meals, soups and porridge, and the counter also carries cakes and drinks. British and modern twists sit alongside the traditional Jamaican dishes. The shop itself is small and set in a residential area. Large patties and cocktail patties can be ordered in bulk for events, parties and business customers.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come mainly for the patties, and the oxtail is the one named most often, with the lobster, jerk chicken, fish, prawn, beef, lamb and plantain also mentioned. Praise centres on flaky pastry, a wide choice of fillings and large pieces of oxtail, chicken and lobster, with a queue moving quickly and friendly service. Close behind, one reviewer liked the rice and peas and BBQ chicken. The complaints are substantial. Several say the food was not hot, with patties not kept warm and offered microwaved in store. Others found the oxtail patty and meal boxes very salty, the oxtail meal's portion small with only a few dry pieces, and patties dry with little filling. One diner found the peppered steak dry, the jerk bitter and the mac and cheese made with plain fusilli and barely any cheese. A seamoss juice was described as thick like a gel and lacking flavour, and the staff declined to exchange it.

“I'm sooooo disappointed in the portion size. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I ordered the large oxtail and rice and peas and I literally had about 3 small pieces of very dry Oxtail. The patty is nice but the meal was a real let down.”

“The staff.. they’re quite rude and they look like they don’t want to be there. Very unfriendly, and not welcoming. The patties.. I had better. So much better, it’s mediocre. I think healthy eaters is wayyyy better by far. Plus I found a hair on my patty I felt sick and didn’t want it anymore.”

“I have had there patties before which I found nice. I went 2 days ago and ordered an oxtail patty which was soooooo SALTY! And I ordered an oxtail medium box meal again was salty. Everything is salty even the cabbage. Makes it not enjoyable to eat.”

“Drove 45 mins for this place, so disappointing. Peppered steak was dry, rice and peas are not all that and the jerk was really bitter. Plantain was hard and don’t get me started on the mac and cheese. No mac. No cheese. All Asdas own fusilli. Worst caribbean food I’ve ever had to be honest”

“I am so disappointed. I came here with friends a couple years ago and bought patties which were delicious. I don't live nearby so this time when I finally got round to go I bought quite a few to enjoy with the family. These patties were dry and barely had filling. I opened up the Oxtail one and as you can see the filling was ridiculous. Very very disappointed!! I will never go back there.”
