About Tawa Roti

Tawa Roti is a Caribbean restaurant in London, at 12 Clapham High St, serving Trinidadian food. The roti and buss up shot are made fresh while you watch, so the cooking happens in front of the counter. Buss up shot comes with curry chicken or curry goat. Doubles are served with chana and chutneys, and pumpkin or pepper can be added on request. Pholourie arrives with tamarind sauce. The space is small, with a few stools, benches and seats around the sides. Tawa Roti is walk-in, with no reservations.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the doubles, with one calling them the best in London for the balance of chana and chutneys, and another group ordering a second portion before leaving. Buss up shot roti comes close behind, with the curry chicken and curry goat versions praised, and pumpkin inside singled out as a favorite. Pholourie and sorrel juice also earn mentions, though one reviewer found the tamarind sauce could be sweeter and the macaroni pie only okay. Several from Trinidad or first-timers describe the flavour as authentic, the staff as friendly, and the roti made fresh in view. The space is a small takeaway with a few stools and benches, and it gets busy. Two reviewers were sharply disappointed: one found the food lacking flavour and unauthentic, with most of it thrown away, while another found the chicken roti full of watery chickpeas and hardly any chicken. One warns the pepper is strong. Even the unhappy diner called the roti soft and the staff polite.

“I went into this place completely blind with my cousin, genuinely thinking it was Indian. Then I saw the sign saying “West Indian” and being Indian myself, started wondering which part of India we were talking about and I was intrigued. The space is small and there are a few seats if you want to grab a quick bite. Once I read the menu, things started to make a little more sense in that it was perhaps referencing the West Indies/ Caribbean. After reading the reviews, I realised it’s Trini cuisine. I had the curry chicken with buss up shot roti, and it was delicious. There were familiar spices and flavours, but what really struck me was how different cultures can take something as seemingly simple as a curry and make it completely their own. This was such an unexpected introduction to Trini food, but I left feeling genuinely inspired and connected. The food absolutely does Trini cuisine justice. Delicious, comforting and a lovely little cultural discovery.”

“Without a doubt the best doubles I have ever eaten in London. I used to be a regular at Roti Joupa and was sad they closed down a few years ago, but relieved with joy when I found out another Trini takeaway spot has set up shop there. I went there today and also stopped over at Trini Things in Brixton and have to say these doubles are superior. The complexity in flavour, texture amd perfect balance of chana and chutneys make this spot the new champion in South London for doubles and Trini food. Had the sorrel juice also which was super refreshing with a hint of clove. If you're looking for the beat doubles on South London, this place is it 🥰”

“Roti was full of watery chick peas. Hardly any chicken inside and if it was you couldn’t taste it atall. Absolutely disappointed. Took one bite and left the rest. The shop that was there before used to do nice tasty roti wraps full of meat, jerk etc. I knew the shop name and sign had changed. But i had no idea that it was different owners with completely different food from the last owners.”

“Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing food experiences I’ve had. I had high hopes for this place, especially as I know good Trini food well. Sadly, the food was extremely disappointing. It lacked flavour, didn’t taste authentic to us, and the smell was unpleasant rather than the rich, appetising aroma you would expect from proper Trini food. We tried several items from the menu and unfortunately nothing stood out. I was genuinely embarrassed serving this to family and friends , as I expected much better. In the end, most of the food went uneaten and who did eat had to force and eat and most of it we had to throw away. The only positive I can mention is that the roti itself was soft, and the people running the place were polite and friendly. I genuinely wanted to enjoy the food, but for us, this was not authentic Trini food and we would not return.”

“As someone from Trinidad, buss up shot has always been one of my favorite foods, so when I heard about this place a few days ago, I knew I had to go and try it for myself. I’m so glad I did because it truly exceeded my expectations! The food was absolutely amazing and reminded me so much of being back home in Trinidad. Every bite brought that authentic taste I love. On top of that, the customer service was excellent—friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better. I’ll definitely be coming back again!”
