About Farmer J St James's Park
On Orchard Pl in London, Farmer J St James's Park is a restaurant serving seasonal food cooked from scratch on site, with ingredients sourced from high-welfare British farms where possible. Service runs hot-bar style, so the staff guide you through the options and build your tray. Customers choose a brown rice or cabbage base, then add vegetable sides such as roasted sesame broccoli. Steak is among the hot-bar choices, and there is a tofu main with a vegan option. Gluten free symbols on the menu mark suitable dishes, and a gluten free cookie is available. Breakfast includes an almond, date, tahini and banana porridge. The restaurant opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return for the steak and the mac and cheese, with one reviewer calling the mac and cheese the best they have eaten. Close behind are the build-your-own tray with veggie sides such as roasted sesame broccoli and miso kale, the tofu, and the almond, date tahini and banana porridge, all described as well seasoned, generous and made from scratch. Iced coffee, iced matcha and the gluten free cookie also earn praise, along with friendly staff who guide first-timers through their choices. Complaints are real and specific. One regular reports a dry, unseasoned sweet potato with some burnt pieces, and a chicken and mac and cheese served at room temperature. Another says quality has declined and received a blackened avocado. A third notes the Fieldtray portion has shrunk, and one finds a banana bread and chocolate muffin small and average. One reviewer describes a dirty bathroom with an overflowing sink, and another a slightly sticky table. A few mention busy lunchtimes, and one hopes the facilities get tidied up.

“We have been traveling to London and Paris for two weeks and eating out every meal everyday from cafe to fine dining. We found Farmer J towards the end of our trip and this is one of our favorite places now. It’s real food made from scratch. I had the veggie option (1/2 brown rice with 1/2 cabbage plus 3 vegetables side options - roasted sesame broccoli, oyster mushroom with broccolini, and miso kale/avocado salad. Husband had the steak while kid had the tofu. Everyone was happy with their meals and we felt good afterwards. We like healthy food that is well seasoned. Some dishes might be a bit salty for us but overall, we appreciate the real food made from scratch. The ice matcha and ice hojicha latte is good. There is free wifi. Table might be a bit sticky but environmental is comfortable. We wish we knew of this place before!”

“I love Farmer J so much, I get it every time I come to London!! This combo of things wasn’t my favourite, but I’m still grateful for the gluten free symbols on the menu and the wide variety of options! The GF cookie was also such a treat!”

“I love Farmer J, it’s my go to. But last 2 times quality has noticeably declined. As evidenced in this pic. I discovered this when i reached home. Gang, slice the avocado and it’s black, toss it, don’t serve it.”

“I could not recommend this place high enough. It’s so refreshing to have somewhere to eat that isn’t burgers or hotdogs and chips. I had the farmer grains, steak, mac and cheese and spiced potatoes. Everything was so delicious. The steak was one of the best flavours of steak and I’ve been to well known chained steak places that have been less flavoursome. The mac and cheese is probably the best mac and cheese I’ve ever eaten. Everything here was delicious and reasonably priced. Even down to the iced coffee being fantastic. Honestly I tell everyone about my experience here - all staff I encounter were so delightful and patient. Informative and explained the options well without hiding hidden costs of sauces and stuff until the end. My only downfall is there’s none in Essex! I would be coming to Farmer J’s weekly if they built one in North Essex (hint). But tidy area, nice atmosphere.”

“Always very busy at lunchtime. Fieldtray portion size has definitely been reduced. A nice payday treat but not a regular visit. £4 for a very small and average banana bread and chocolate muffin.”

“"At Farmer J we care, we care where our ingredients come from and how our food is prepared. That’s why we are trying to change the game. Serving honest food, that rolls with the seasons, is mindfully sourced (from as many, high-welfare British farms as possible), is bursting with flavour and most importantly, is scratch cooked on-site"”
