Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast is the most repeated draw, with diners calling it superb, flavorful and perfectly done, and one regular saying they would return again and again for it. Brunch comes close behind, with reviewers naming the kimchi pancake with eggs, the Balkan breakfast, avocado toast with poached eggs, shakshuka with homemade garlic bread, and fluffy pancakes alongside a full English with sausage and mushrooms, several noting big portions. The grill earns praise too. One reviewer calls the čevapi with four-cheese and traditional sauces outrageous, and a group of diners appreciated the advice they got on a meat-share mix for three. Coffee is described as top tier and perfectly brewed, and hot chocolates and a matcha latte also get mentions. Reviewers describe the room as cosy and relaxed, with good music, wine bottles on display and plugs for laptops, and they call the staff and owners warm and welcoming. Vegan and vegetarian options are singled out as high quality. One diner finished a meal with Balkan rakija, and another noticed a neighbourhood dog stopping by.

“I was in town visiting my sister, she said she knew a great place for brunch, we ventured, we crossed canals and traversed mucky terrain. We approached that place...it was closed. Thankfully, we found our way to Burnt Umber and life was good again. The decor is classy and comfy, the staff member was nice and friendly and the food, oh the food. I went random kinda healthy, trying the Kimchi pancake with a couple of eggs on the side, absolutely delicious. Sis had the balkan breakfast - loved it. Great to try something different, next time will go in the evening and go full Serbian - the grill platter looks oooweeee!”

“Had the Sunday Roast here and it was honestly amazing—so flavorful and perfectly done. The place itself is beautiful, super cozy and aesthetic, and the whole area around the restaurant is definitely worth visiting too. The staff were all so sweet and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I’m genuinely obsessed and will 100% be back! 🌷”

“Burnt Umber is different gravy. Had the čevapi Balkan sausage with bread, lettuce, and both the four-cheese and traditional sauces. Outrageous.Partner went shakshuka with homemade garlic bread. Rich, deep, and properly comforting. Coffee’s top tier too. The owners are beautiful people and you can taste the quality. They’re using seriously good ingredients. If you haven’t been yet, sort your life out and go.”

Good to know
“Burnt Umber is a family-run Balkan restaurant in Hackney Wick, run by Ivana and Jaro Petrak since 2019. We cook the Eastern-European and Mediterranean food we grew up with: hand-rolled ćevapi and pljeskavica off the grill, house-made ajvar and kajmak, and a glass of Yebiga rakija. Brunch runs daily with Balkan dishes and British favourites; the Balkan grill is on Thursday to Saturday evenings; and Sunday is a proper roast with all the trimmings. A relaxed, dog-friendly room with outdoor seating, and we do private hire for groups. Book via Quandoo or just call. Prijatno!”
