About Birley Sandwiches

Birley Sandwiches is a restaurant in London at Building 95 on Cannon St, built around a three-counter ticket-and-stamp ordering system. Guests choose at a counter and take a ticket. They pay at the till, get the ticket stamped, and hand it in when their order is called. One salad counter lets you mix your own salad, and another turns out toasted sandwiches, with a daily special such as hot beef, mushroom and cheddar. Homemade soup includes a lentil soup served with bread. Lunchtime brings one long queue that sometimes reaches the door, and the staff expect you to know your order by the time you reach the front. Breakfast sandwiches, including a full English sandwich, are also on the menu.

“Incredible breakfast sandwiches. Staff do need coaching through the orders. If you man mark them, stay firm, you'll reap the rewards. It is a little bit like winning 2-0 against Galatasaray away. Tough going, but after FT, there is nothing quite like it.”

“My 2 stars is for the food and the 1 or 2 people that are nice. But the rest of the staff. Come on, if you hate your job don’t do it. They are so grumpy I walk in and I get looked at and I am asked ‘yes’. Customer service is shocking we go back because the food is good. The manager is nice and there is 2 people that are nice. The rest just don’t like the public I have never ever seen them smile or says good morning or good afternoon. It’s just ‘Yes’ literally.”

“My favourite place to get lunch! Feels like everything is freshly prepared and with quality ingredients. Staff are always very lovely, just hate the lunch rush but it makes sense for such a good sandwich place. Most people go for their salads but the toasted sandwiches and homemade soup is high standard and fairly affordable. For anyone going for their first time, it’s really not difficult to ask where you pay while you’re waiting for your food and yes there could be more signage but I don’t think it calls for a bad review, it’s not that stressful, coming from someone who is extremely anxious and usually overwhelmed in any public place.”

“I had a very uncomfortable experience at the salad counter today. The woman serving me (the first one from the left) kept whispering with the woman next to her (wearing a hijab) throughout the entire process. She was ignoring me at first, and even while preparing my salad, she continued whispering behind her hand. It made me feel unwelcome and disrespected. I've always had great experiences at the sandwich station, so it's disappointing to see toxic behavior like this at the salad counter. I won't remove this comment until the issue is addressed.”

“I have visited this place like a hundred times when I was working nearby for over a year. I'm a Indian & vegetarian - so lentil soup and bread was comforting filling. I tried salad one day and it was amazing that shifted to that everyday. People may feel cold 1 or 2 but rest are warm. Billing ladies specially. I have moved back home from UK and miss this place and the salad everyday. Love this place, I may visit UK just for their salad if I can.. thanks for a lasting impression”
