About Roasting Plant Coffee

Roasting Plant Coffee is a coffee shop at 4 Borough High St in London, a short walk from London Bridge. Its Javabot system roasts beans in micro-batches in the middle of the shop and sends them through clear tubes, so each cup is brewed to order from beans roasted on site. Different blends are available to taste before you choose one for your drink, and bags of beans are sold to take home. The menu includes flat whites and lattes, with oat milk available, and banana bread to have alongside. Dogs are welcome inside. The business also runs a second branch off Gracechurch Street.

Customer Review Summary

The main complaint concerns milk drinks. Three reviewers say the latte or flat white was poorly steamed or had sloppy or absent latte art, with one saying quality varies by who makes the drink. One reviewer found the coffee only OK, the roastery theatre unremarkable and the space noisy and not very clean, and called it overpriced at over five pounds a cup, while others call prices reasonable. Reviewers also mention finding seats while busy and using a laptop there, and one picked up coffee beans to take home.

“Nice, little place a stone throw from London Bridge. We order some cappuccino (frothy coffee) with oat milk and some banana cake. The coffee was OK, but one can have some nice choice of seeds, and the cake was excellent. The price was not exaggerated for the area, and all in all, it is a good place to stop after a walk along the river. The staff was friendly and accomodating.”
  • Maryna Kinchyna
“I wouldn’t recommend it. The coffee itself was OK, but at over £5 per cup it feels very overpriced for the overall experience. The roastery theatre sounds like a hook, but don’t over-expect, I didn’t find it particularly authentic or interesting. The space is noisy, not comfortable for a stay, and unfortunately wasn’t very clean when I visited. I did manage to find a couple of power sockets, which was useful, but that was one of the few positives. For this price point, I expected a much cleaner, more comfortable and more distinctive experience.”
  • Minju Kim
“Friendly baristas and good coffee. They recommended me the Indonesian beans and it did not disappoint! Also very cool to see the beans travelling through the tubes.”
  • Mihir Patel
“The coffee beans looks amazing and the place very nice but to be honest the milk as I ordered latte is just not up to mark. Latte is a combination of good coffee and also the milk must be steamed correctly poured gently and if capable make good art. The latter is nothing of what you expect.”
  • Li koon
“The cafe was busy but could find seats. The selection of coffee is great. The coffee is aromatic and tasted balanced. The lemon cake is nice. You could pick up coffee beans here.”

Highlights

“We are Roasting Plant®, a bunch of coffee-lovers from the Lower East Side NYC who set out on a quest to create the perfect just-roasted cup. Roasting Plant Coffee was founded by Mike Caswell in his garage with the invention of Javabot™, an in-store roasting and brewing system that automatically roasts coffee in every Roasting Plant café, and quickly brews every custom cup to order. Mike's love and experience in coffee (from Coffee Connection in Boston to Starbucks corporate in Seattle) and his deep understanding of engineering and business process led him to develop Javabot. This state of the art system roasts in micro-batches in every store and transports beans through tubes using air or pneumatics.”
