About Nagare Coffee Spitalfields

Nagare Coffee Spitalfields is a coffee shop at 40 Brushfield St in London, near Spitalfields Market. The name is Japanese for flowing like a river and comes from Bruce Lee's line about being water. The shop reflects it with a minimal, Japanese-style design and ceramic cups. Seating is limited, and the format leans toward grab-and-go rather than sit-down. The drinks list pairs specialty coffee, including flat white and filter coffee, with a hojicha latte, and vegan banana bread is among the bakes. Pop-ups and collaborations bring other independent brands and artists into the shop. It is open daily. Nagare also runs branches on Carnaby Street and Bankside.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the coffee itself, with the flat white and oat latte named repeatedly and a filter coffee praised for its care. Several say the baristas never cut corners even when busy, and one describes drinks made at the right temperature and strength. Close behind are the baked goods: the dark chocolate burnt butter cookie, the vegan banana bread, and a Thai milk tea cookie, though one reviewer says it tastes nothing like Thai milk tea. A matcha and a hojicha latte also earn mentions. Several describe a cozy, minimal space with friendly staff. The main complaint is room. The shop is small and often packed, seating is described as minimal and hard to find on weekends, and one reviewer says it gets noisy enough to want headphones while reading. One finds the bean on the acidic side, and another wishes the pastry selection had more variety. Reviewers also mention pop-ups and collaborations with Japanese brands, and one enjoyed a hojicha latte with hojicha powder sprinkled on top.

“I really like this small Japanese coffee shop. I enjoyed a lovely hojicha latte with oak milk. Made with care with hojicha powder sprinkled on top. The staff are lovely and service is great. Highly recommended.”

“A stylish independent coffee shop in the heart of Spitalfields’ vibrant food and drink scene. The quality of the coffee—from the roast and flavour to its impeccable presentation—was outstanding. With reasonable prices, a charming corner location, and both indoor and outdoor seating, it offers an inviting atmosphere for any time of day. The café also hosts pop-up events featuring emerging artists, reflecting its commitment to fostering culture and supporting the local creative community. Together with their branch on Carnaby Street, they continue to attract coffee lovers for a treat. Good job, and special thanks to the team for having a chit-chat with their guests.”

“A beautifully curated specialty coffee shop right near Spitalfields. Nagare Coffee pairs a pristine, minimalist aesthetic with an elite level of coffee craftsmanship. The cozy space feels deeply intentional, showcasing stunning ceramic cups and meticulous brewing equipment that look like art pieces. The coffee itself is exceptional, smooth, complex, and prepared with immense care by highly skilled baristas. It’s the perfect spot to grab an immaculate filter coffee or flat white while soaking in a calm, upscale café atmosphere. Highly recommended if you appreciate great design and phenomenal coffee!”
  • Diana Ayala
“Beautiful little coffee shop with a Scandinavian-meets-English heritage aesthetic. Everything feels thoughtfully curated — warm wood tones, vintage character, and a calm, cosy atmosphere. The coffee is prepared perfectly: ideal temperature, balanced strength, and just the right size. A place that clearly cares about the details.”
  • E W
“It’s a really nice and cute Japanese cafe with high quality drinks and lots of options. Seats are comfy to take a break with friends. Occasional collaboration with other indi Japanese brands like rice balls which is good to explore new brands. However it’s a small shop and it’s often packed with people, difficult to find a seat on the weekend.”

Good to know

“Nagare means flowing like a river in Japanese. The name is inspired by a famous line by Bruce Lee - "Be water, my friend...Be formless, shapeless, like water."; the line directs to a state of mind and body which is flexible, adaptive, and open-minded. This is the inspiration and the motto of the coffee shop, to strive for excellence, yet to keep our mind open to new tastes, forms, and ideas. We design our space and products in line with this philosophy - neutral and minimal; a place like a calmly flowing stream, where people can rest, reflect, and recharge.”
