About Ye Olde Black Bull

Ye Olde Black Bull is a pub on Broadway in London, open daily, with cask ales and keg beers on the bar. The drinks list includes Guinness, St Austell's Tribute and Wherry Amber Ale. Screens around the pub show live sport, including England games, so match days draw a crowd, and the pub also fills during gigs nearby. Signs on the bar and the wall set out the house etiquette, including that the bar will not serve anyone who stands there on their phone, so customers know how ordering works before they reach the front. Customers are expected to buy a drink while they are inside.

Customer Review Summary

Reviews split sharply, and the most repeated thread is the owner's rule that everyone must buy a drink. Several reviewers describe being told to leave or being shouted at for asking for tap water, sitting with water, or buying only a pack of cheddar crisps, often while trying to watch an England game. One describes a two-finger gesture through the window, another was told he could not come back in after stepping out to smoke, and one reports a friend being pushed and felt it was racially motivated. A reviewer who asked to use the toilet was told to buy something first.

“Very disappointing experience. I asked for a glass of tap water and was told I had to buy a drink or leave. The owner then asked our entire group to leave the premises and was extremely rude and aggressive throughout. There is absolutely no reason to treat anyone with such disrespect. I won’t be returning and would recommend others avoid this pub.”

“Seriously do not go here. Small female owner/ manager verbally abused someone in our group for trying to get tap water, tried to charge her for it and kick her out for not paying for a drink. Then very aggressively told two other people that they had to leave as they hadn’t ordered a drink ( we had been there for two minutes and were planning to go and buy one). She completely lost her head, put two fingers up at us through the window when we left! For context most of our group had already bought a drink and we were completely sober/ not rowdy. Needs new management ASAP, do not give them your money.”

“The lady owner is terribly rude! We were looking for a pub to watch one of the England game and managed to find a free table. My partner got a beer but I just got some water because I didnt want to get a drink just yet. She came up to me and demanded that I get a drink. Extremely rude, went on to say "this isnt just free tv, you're not in your living room" like what? I get that the pub needs to make money and I wouldn't even have minded buying a drink if she simply said asked! What a rude thing to say to someone. Never coming back. Then after a while saw them kick out another guy for not buying a drink, extremely rude, even screamed at that guy's face. This is not how you should treat your customers. I suggest no one support this business”

“Absolutely terrible experience. The manager was extremely rude, dismissive, and completely unwelcoming from the moment I arrived. Rather than being helpful or professional, they made me feel like an inconvenience. Customer service was …”
