About The Scolt Head

The Scolt Head is a pub on Culford Road in London, with a menu that pairs English pub classics with Thai-style plates. Vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes all appear on it, so a mixed group can order from one kitchen. Fish and chips sits among the English dishes, and the Sunday roast comes as a lamb roast or a vegetarian mushroom wellington. Meals and roasts are served in the beer garden courtyard, and a restaurant seating area gives a second place to sit down. The pub is open daily. At the bar, draught Aspall cider and a range of beers are on offer, including non-alcoholic options.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is the most frequent draw, with a mushroom wellington and lamb singled out and diners eating in the garden. Close behind are the fish and chips, described as crisp with a firm fillet, and the sticky toffee pudding. One reviewer also praises a scotched egg with black pudding and onglet with horseradish creme fraiche. Reviewers call the food fresh and a classier take on traditional pub cooking, and note a solid beer selection. Service draws mixed comments: some find staff friendly, while others say they were not very attentive or could be friendlier. One reviewer says a wrong order meant roasts arrived at different times, another found the side salad flavourless, and one calls the pub too busy for a quiet pint. One reviewer reports an aggressive encounter with a security staff member outside after closing, and says bar staff dismissed the concern. A mulled wine poached pear with rum and raisin ice cream closes one reviewer's meal.

“If you’re looking for a buzzy pub in DBV with a nice courtyard and decent food, you can’t go wrong here. Always pretty busy here. Would go elsewhere if trying to enjoy my pint in peace. Not the best pub for watching sport.”

“I recently visited the Scolt Head with friends after work. Just before last orders, I bought a pint. Around five minutes later, staff announced that the pub was closed and everyone needed to leave. At that point I still had around three-quarters of my pint left, and several of my friends also had large amounts of their drinks remaining. We followed the instructions and moved outside as requested. Once outside, a female member of the security staff was immediately rude and appeared to be deliberately trying to intimidate customers. She told me to go back inside with my pint. I explained that we had just been instructed by staff to leave the building. Despite this, she attempted to grab the pint from my hands. When I asked what she was doing, she proceeded to rub her hands and fingers around the rim of the glass, making it clear that she intended to stop me from drinking the rest of it. A few of my friends questioned why she was behaving this way, and she responded by raising her voice and continuing to act in an aggressive and confrontational manner towards them as well. I asked to speak to a manager and went back inside to report what had happened. The same security staff member followed extremely closely behind me. When I explained the situation to the bar staff, my concerns were completely dismissed. Around six members of staff gathered together and raised their voices at me rather than listening to what I was saying. The entire interaction felt hostile and intimidating, and I was left feeling genuinely uncomfortable and unsafe. The behaviour of the female security staff member was particularly concerning. Security staff are supposed to manage situations calmly and professionally, helping to defuse tension and ensure customers feel safe. Instead, her conduct was aggressive, confrontational, and appeared designed to escalate the situation rather than resolve it. Behaviour like this from someone in a security role creates an unsafe and hostile environment for customers and is completely unacceptable. I will not be returning to this pub. The environment is unsafe, and the way customers are treated is not what you expect when paying premium prices.”

“The food was incredible and the atmosphere perfectly suited a relaxed traditional pub experience. My only slight complaint is the service could be a bit more friendly.”

“It was a chilly morning up until lunch time. Once we entered The Scolt Head, we were immediately enveloped by the warm greetings of the hostess and the rest of the folks behind the bar. Good beginnings! I have been enjoying the British ciders from various regions and the draught Aspall cider was crisp and just the perfect dry/sweet flavor. That went well with the scotched egg with its flavorful crust, runny yolk and black pudding. The side salad and piccalilli (picked vegetables in mustard) were great accompaniments as well. Their fish and chips was crisp all around and the fillet was firm. The onglet or hanger steak was cooked beautifully and benefitted from the horseradish creme fraiche. The cherry glazed duck was tender, the duck skin crackling added a necessary crispy component to the disk and the vegetables were all consumed with great abandon. I find it weird that I rarely see rum & raisin ice cream in desserts so when I saw their menu, I had to have the mulled wine poached pear with the ice cream. The pear was festive and tasted of celebrations while the rum & raisin added the party. The warm toffee pudding will not go wrong with the vanilla ice cream. I should come back here even for a pint.”
