About The Regent

The Regent is a pub at 21 Chestnut Grove in London, next to Balham station. Its back garden follows a Narnia theme, with a wardrobe at the entrance, a sleigh and a Mr. Tumnus grotto. Groups can reserve the garden, and indoor space is also available for events. Inside, reclaimed oak tables, booth seating and exposed brick give the room the look of a British pub. The layout leaves space for both diners and sports fans, and football plays on the TV. The menu runs from burgers to bar snacks and sharing plates, with Sunday roast and a weekend brunch menu. Orders go through a QR code on the table, and staff bring drinks to tables as well as serving at the bar. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the staff and the service, with bar staff and servers described as welcoming, attentive and good with drink recommendations, though the Sunday roast earns its own praise for flavour. Food is called delicious and good value, and one group event praised generous portions and brownies served as half portions with individual pots of ice cream. The garden with its Narnia-style wardrobe, sleigh and grotto, plus QR code ordering at the table, gets a mention too, and one reviewer was pleased to sit next to a dog. Complaints are fewer but specific. One diner waited for a table and had to go to the bar for service during a Sunday roast, with meals arriving about ten minutes apart. Another reports being charged for two drinks not had and a pie with only a few peas. Others cite no draught ale, drinks over seven pounds with short pours, uncomfortable window chairs, and staff repeatedly saying the pub was closing soon an hour before closing time. One group moved indoors when the garden got noisy during football, and staff set up a quieter space quickly.

“Nice pub but not committed to their opening hours. I do understand wanting to wrap things up towards the end of the shift but being warned entering an hour before close that 'we're closing soon' and reminded of this by staff multiple times over the next 20 minutes is a bit much... I'd go elsewhere later in the evening, or recommend amending the listed hours if staff are unhappy having customers around until the end of the advertised hours.”

“What a lovely pub! Pleasantly surprised by the sheer size, vibe and great bar staff. Attended for an event, not usually venturing south of border, but would happily go back. Great job team. You made my evening :)”

“We visited The Regent on 20th June as part of a hen celebration for 28 people. From my initial enquiry through to the event itself, The Regent team were exceptional. It had been difficult to find a venue that could accommodate both our group size and timings, but they were responsive from the start. The location is ideal - close to public transport while being just far enough from the station to avoid the crowds. The team quickly suggested suitable spaces and understood exactly the type of event we were planning: a quiz themed around the bride. Their communication was prompt, knowledgeable and reassuring, leaving me confident we were in excellent hands. Before the event, we received pre-order forms, making organisation incredibly straightforward. I was able to arrange sharing starters and desserts while catering for every dietary requirement. The team also answered detailed questions about allergens and menu adaptations thoroughly and without ever making me feel like I was causing inconvenience. Both their expertise and attitude were hugely appreciated. On the day we were slightly delayed, but a member of staff called to check on us, and our reserved garden area was waiting when we arrived. Andrew, the manager, reviewed the order with me and ensured guests with allergies were identified before service began. Everything felt anticipated and carefully planned rather than reactive. We ordered the first round of drinks and paid for food upfront, after which guests could order at the bar themselves. Despite the size of our group, staff brought drinks to our tables, which was fantastic service. The bar team handled our large order efficiently and professionally. We hit one small snag. It was a beautiful day, football was on and the garden became noisier than expected for our quiz. The Regent team immediately suggested moving us indoors to a quieter area after our starters and drinks. They prepared and reserved the space quickly, demonstrating impressive flexibility and problem-solving without making any of us feel stressed. Despite hosting a lively quiz, we never felt like we were disturbing other customers. It genuinely felt like a welcoming community pub where private celebrations could comfortably take place alongside regular trade. The food deserves special mention. We had pre-ordered mains to arrive during the quiz, and service was excellent, with very little delay between the first and last meals. Great care was taken with every order, especially those with dietary requirements. The food was fantastic and exceptional value for money. I had worried some dishes might be too light for such a long day, but the portions were generous and everything was delicious. Many guests commented afterwards on both the quality and value. I had also asked whether brownies could be served as half portions on sharing platters, as not everyone would want dessert. Not only was this accommodated beautifully, but the team also served individual pots of ice cream alongside them - a thoughtful touch I hadn't expected. Throughout the day, every member of staff showed resourcefulness and genuine care in ensuring everything ran smoothly. I had been slightly nervous beforehand, as I'd never visited the venue and there were plenty of variables outside anyone's control. In the end, it exceeded every expectation. I cannot praise the staff, food and venue highly enough. This is an exceptionally well-run pub with a team that genuinely cares about delivering outstanding hospitality. Management and staff should be incredibly proud of what they have created. Thank you for playing such a memorable part in our day. It was a pleasure organising our event with The Regent team. Don't sleep on this fantastic place.”

“A pub with no beer, no draught ale at all. Not a hood first impression. Pleasant enough pub but the drinks we did buy were all over £7. Estrella, Jubel and a G & T... vastly overpriced for a pretty ordinary pub. They really need to ensure the staff know how to fill the glasses to the brim. If I'm paying that sort of cash for a pint, then that's what I expect.”
