About Red Dog Saloon Soho

Red Dog Saloon Soho is an American restaurant at 20 Berwick St in London, built around slow-smoked meat. The kitchen cooks in smokers imported from the USA, running meats for up to 16 hours over hickory and mesquite. Brisket and pork belly come out of those smokers, and the menu also lists a Juicy Lucy Hoagie for those who want a sandwich. Platters are named after ships, which gives the menu a naval thread alongside the barbecue. The restaurant is small, and its decor follows an American BBQ saloon theme with music to match. Iced tea is unlimited with a meal.

Customer Review Summary

The USS Oklahoma platter is the draw most diners return to, often ordered alongside the USS New York platter, with portions so large that several take leftovers home. Brisket is the standout, from a juicy, tender Brisket Philly to the platter cuts, and the ribs are described as falling off the bone. Pork belly, hot links, a Juicy Lucy Hoagie, Texas Toast and unlimited iced tea also earn praise. Service splits opinion. Several find the staff polite, friendly and quick, but one diner without a booking called the team rude and uninterested, and another waited a long while to order more. Food complaints are scattered: dry chicken, rock hard pork belly burnt ends, cold and overly sauced buffalo wings, fries that could be crunchier, milkshakes that could be thicker and a mustardy coleslaw. One reviewer suggests reserving because the room is small. Another recalls food that wasn't hot enough being rectified swiftly, then a waitress bringing out ice cream and singing happy birthday for a child.

“Ordered the USS New York platter, the only good food was the brisket and the burgers. The pork belly burnt ends were rock hard and dry! The buffalo chicken wings were overly sauced, cold and spicy! Wish they gave more brisket instead and also helped us sliced the burger in half.”

“Fantastic food, couldn’t fault it. But the service? Absolutely horrendous. I’ve never seen a group of women so uninterested in what’s going on around them, and the rudeness was unreal, they didn’t seem to care at all what was going on around them? Don’t know if it was because we didn’t book but won’t be returning due to staff, and had the cheek to put 12.5% tip on, hope it goes to the kitchen staff!!! Portion sizes are crazy as well As I said though, food was unreal and it’s a shame”

“Heard great things about it beforehand so I went with a couple of friends to try it out. It did not disappoint. We got for Oklahoma Platter for x3 people and the wing platter, despite the warning from the waitress that it was too much food. Everything was amazing with great flavours and we had a fair amount of food left over to take home. They also had a great selection of drinks, especially alcoholic ones but I stuck with the unlimited iced tea which was also amazing.”

“Delicious American BBQ. Having lived there for a few years I was missing NC BBQ and delighted to see it on their menu. Platter was huge and had to take a doggie bag home. Texas Toast was best I've ever had. Daughter was delighted with her "wings" and declared them "best ever". Decor authentic and a great range of options to on menu to explore. Only things I would change...coleslaw. They use their house sauce I think so it's very mustardy and therefore spicy. I prefer it to be a creamy counterpoint to spice in the BBQ! I missed Southern Hushpuppies, sweetcorn and having a selection of different BBQ sauces on the table. Hope they will add them!”

“Great American BBQ spot in central London! If brisket, chicken, hot links, pork belly and beef rib sounds like you then look no further, Red Dog Saloon has you covered! We got the USS Oaklahoma platter and it did not disappoint, everything tasted amazing. The rib just fell off the bone, perfection! The portion sizes are large so make sure you are ready to feast. The staff on the day were very polite and the food arrived in a timely manner. The restaurant is quite small so I would recommend making a reservation.”

Highlights

“Barbeque grew up in the South of the USA, where cooks slow-roasted cuts of meat over fire pits to make them tender. Exposure to smoke from smouldering wood gave the meat its distinctive BBQ flavour. At Red Dog Saloon in Soho, we honour that craft with award-winning smokers imported from the USA, built to recreate the slow cooking process of those original fire pits. We smoke our meats for up to 16 hours using traditional American woods like hickory and mesquite for a full, bold flavour. For authentic Texas barbeque food in Soho, look no further than Red Dog Saloon.”
