About Byrnes Fish and Chips

Byrnes Fish and Chips is a family-run fish and chips takeaway in Liverpool, at 69 Stuart Rd, and the family has worked from the same premises for 96 years. The menu offers cod and haddock, with potato scollops as another choice. Fish and chips are cooked fresh to order, so there is a wait while the food is fried. The shop is small, and the queue sometimes reaches nearly to the door.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return to this family-run Stuart Rd chippy for the fish and chips, with the cod and haddock singled out for a crunchy golden batter and flaky, fresh fish that stays crisp to the end. Close behind is the fruity curry sauce, which two reviewers name as a highlight, along with mushy peas, potato scollops and a cheese savoury. Staff are described as friendly and chatty, and regulars are known by name. A queue and a wait while the food is cooked to order come up more than once. The criticisms are specific: one reviewer found the cod and haddock batter and the cheese savoury undercooked and the tartare sauce a little too acidic, while another complained that one server gave noticeably smaller portions than the others. Another reviewer was told hake and plaice were off the menu for the season. Several mention easy street parking nearby, and one reviewer saw the family bantering behind the counter as they fried the fish.

“Absolutely fantastic meal today. The fish was cooked to perfection with a lovely golden, crispy batter, and you could tell the fish inside was fresh and flaky. It was served on a generous bed of chips that hit the spot. Everything was still piping hot when I opened the parcel. I will definitely be back soon.”

“This is my favourite fish and chip shop in the whole of Merseyside. Fish and chips are quality fruity curry sauce lovely. Sometimes a queue, but that’s because it is that good.”

“The food in there is absolutely delicious. The fish is very good. But what pisses me off is one of the staff that worked there seems to be always grumpy and her portion sizes are way smaller than the other servers. I don’t know why she does this. I think her name is Allison Ps hope the owner addresses this soon as I might have to take my business elsewhere 😕”

“Went just after opening for lunch and could tell how popular the place was by the queue nearly being out of the door! Food took a little while, but it was being freshly cooked to order which makes the wait worthwhile. Mostly everyone in there were regulars known by name which tells you the quality of the food and service. Fish and chips were very tasty, and definitely try the fruity curry sauce. Will come back again.”

“I absolutely love this place, its so friendly. The fact that it's a family business and you can occasionally notice them bantering feels so wholesome. Really feels like a Local Corner shop, filled with people who appreciate and love their jobs. Shall Byrnes stand another century.”
