About Abbey Friar

Abbey Friar is a fish and chips takeaway in Liverpool, at 32 Childwall Abbey Rd, and it is open daily. The menu lists fish in large and small sizes, alongside chips with gravy and mushy peas. The same counter also sells Singapore vermicelli, donner meat and 12 inch pizzas, so a group can order fish and chips and something different in one go. Fried rice and duck spring rolls are on the menu too, and curry sauce is available for the chips. Orders are taken by phone, and there is a tip jar at the counter.

Customer Review Summary

Chips draw the most criticism, described as soggy, under done, reheated and hard, with one reviewer reporting rotten brown chips and a smell of dirty oil. Fish follows: diners describe more batter than fish, tiny fish with hardly any batter, and two small fish arriving when one large and one small were ordered. Another large fish and chips order came out small, and the customer was told to bring it back to prove it. Elsewhere, reviewers report bland fried rice, weak curry sauce, Singapore vermicelli stuck together with hardly any meat, donner meat likened to dog food, and an undercooked pizza with pineapple and peppers after being told it was all meat. Several longtime regulars say standards have slipped from what was once their go to chippy. Staff earn some praise as friendly and chatty, and one reviewer found the portion big, but others describe a bad attitude on the phone and a tip jar remark at the counter. The duck spring rolls were the one item a reviewer was glad to pay for.

“Went for the first time tonight, my partners meal was possibly the worst meal he had ever had. Singapore vermicelli it was all stuck together no colour to it and hardly no meat. When I paid the women said “that change can go in the tip jar” erm no ! So rude.”

“We don't eat take away meals often but when we want fish and chips it has always been from Abbey Friar, this had been our 'go to' chippy for years, always the very best fish and chips. Sad to say not anymore, our last fish and chips were nowhere near as good as they used to be but thought they must be having an off day. Got fish and chips tonight grand total £18, soggy disgusting chips, and fish with more batter than fish, stodge of the highest order, sorry to say we won't be giving them anymore of our custom, after over 25 years plus as loyal customers.”

“Ordered large fish and and chips as part of a larger order but received a small fish and chips, was told to bring it back to prove, have been buying there for 25 years without any problems, you just lost a customer.”

“Wanted some lunch, rather than spending money at the big chains. Very friendly gentleman, had a nice chat. Not sure he understood my "eating in the car". Portion was quite big, but no problem, took it hone and had it there. Great one!”

“Dreadful allround. But honestly the food is a disgrace! Chips reheated and hard and non chewy, tasted yuk. Fish was tiny with hardly any batter on it. At £12.50 it was absolute daylight robbery! Should have took pics to upload on here, but food can look ok at any point, its the taste that matters! First and last visit and will pass the word around to others.....to AVOID at all costs.......especially to your wallet!”
