About The Red Cow

The Red Cow is a thatched pub on Hinckley Rd in Leicester, with beams, flagstones and open fires inside the inn. A bar area for dogs sits alongside a separate restaurant area, so diners with dogs and those without each have their own space. The kitchen cooks homemade food from a menu of 21 dishes, including a pie of the day served with seasonal vegetables and mash. A Sunday roast comes with big Yorkshires. Vegan and dairy free options include a lentil hotpot and an apple and blackberry crumble with dairy free custard. Cask ales are poured at the bar. Tables can be booked ahead through the app.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly, attentive table service, with one server in particular praised repeatedly as bubbly, kind and welcoming, and others described as helpful and smiley. Food draws close behind: diners mention a Sunday roast with big Yorkshires and perfectly cooked meat, the rib eye steak, haddock fish cakes, and creamy mushroom and chorizo sausage starters. A vegan diner recommends the lentil hotpot and the apple and blackberry crumble with dairy free custard, and staff showed the vegan options on an iPad. A dedicated kids' menu and meal offers get a mention too, and one reviewer who brought two dogs found a bar area for them and outdoor seating. The main complaint comes from a birthday visit, where a waitress was described as having a terrible attitude and checked on the table only when the meal was almost finished. One dish arrived burnt and almost inedible, and the assistant manager eventually put it right, while other staff who brought food and drinks were kind and polite.

“We stopped here as had our 2 dogs with us. There was a bar area for dogs and a resturante area. The team, decor, food and drinks were good. There was seating outside. Parking was plenty when we arrived however as we left on a sunday around 1300 it appeared busy with cars and people were parking wherever they could. We precooked a table using the app.”

“We had a lovely evening at The Red Cow in Kirby Muxloe, and I just wanted to give a special mention to Lexi, who looked after us. From the moment we arrived, Lexi was warm, friendly and incredibly attentive. Nothing was too much trouble, and she made us feel genuinely welcome throughout our visit. Her service was professional, efficient and always delivered with a smile. It's employees like Lexi who make all the difference to a dining experience. She is a real credit to The Red Cow, and her excellent customer service certainly didn't go unnoticed. Thank you, Lexi, for helping make our evening so enjoyable. We look forward to visiting again soon!”

“We went there for my daughter's birthday and were greeted with a smile by a friendly member of staff. That was basically the only good thing I can say about the service. The waitress (Libby) who was our host had a terrible attitude—the kind of attitude a teenager has when they can't be bothered by anyone around them. Her body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice shouted, 'I don't want you here, I don't want to serve you, just eat and go.' She only came to ask if we were happy with our food when we had almost finished eating. This wouldn't have been such an issue if the food had been fine; however, one of the dishes was burnt and almost inedible. This was eventually rectified by the assistant manager. Other staff members who brought drinks and food were kind and polite. The food was good too, but the whole experience was ruined by someone who shouldn't be working in hospitality.”

“Myself & my friend really enjoyed our homemade food & the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The staff thanisha & lexi where very helpful with the ipad showing me all the vegan options available to me. Both ladies where very friendly & made us very welcome. I highly recommend the lentil hotpot, & the Apple & blackberry crumble with dairy free custard. Both dairy free & vegan (cruelty free) options. My friend jacob had the homemade pie of the day with seasonal vegetables & mash. He said it was delicious. We both left full up & relaxed after such a lovely experience all around.”
