  “ANY SPARE CHANGE GUV? I popped into the pub for a quick coffee on Leeds Pride Sunday early afternoon (19th July '26) so as to escape the huge market and shopping crowds on Briggate, and the sweltering heat outside on this, one of the hottest days so far this summer. It was a relief to enter the cold pub but I was surprised to see that there were not many people in the place at all; just the odd one or two dotted around. Very quiet. Like a cemetery. The nice lady working behind the bar had set a large empty glass upon the bar with a big notice stuck on it with cellotape, asking people to leave tips and donations for herself, as it was her birthday today. There were two or three bronze coins right at the very bottom of the glass already. I hesitated to ask which birthday it was because when a lady reaches a certain age it can be considered to be impolite to enquire as to her actual age. I didn't have any loose change on me so after drinking my coffee and as I was making my way out of the pub I dropped a written IOU for 20p into the big glass standing on the bar, so that the nice lady didn't think I was being stingy towards her on her birthday. My IOU fluttered to the bottom of the glass and as fast as lightning the good lady reached her hand into the bottom of the glass to retrieve it, and after reading it she shouted thanks to me for my generosity as I was walking out the front door. Nice. I will of course honour the IOU amount in full if I ever visit the pub again, should the good lady wish to present that same IOU to me for redemption. Also worth mentioning, the following event happened ten minutes before I left the pub:- I pulled my phone out of my pocket just to check what time my next bus was due. The barmaid saw me do this and immediately overreacted and started carrying on like a fishwife. She shouted across the room at me (embarrassing herself as well as me), about signs and a pub rule they have banning the use of phones. I pointed out to her that there are also signs up in the place banning swearing and yet you will sometimes hear the regular clientele (the ex. BIG LIL'S crowd who all moved round here when Lil's was shut down for being too violent); when they get inebriated, swearing as loud as they like and not just the odd word. Loudly and constantly. And yet the barmaids don't say anything to them... They don't ask them to be quiet or to stop swearing... Why is that I wonder? Also I agree with other reviewers on here that some drinks prices in here are FAR too high. Also other people besides me have noticed that the place in general can sometimes have a ghastly smell, particularly in the dark narrow corridors leading up to the entrance door which will often stink of drainage, overflowing urinals and human excrement. Be warned if you decide to take your beer outside to drink in the so-called "fresh-air", that these stomach churning stenches are also present in that dark, dour, dank, red-bricked, high-walled, miserable-looking, dirty-floored and flowerless so-called "beer garden"; odours being particularly pungent where the often overflowing industrial-size green wheelie-bins are kept and where the local tramps come to squat down between to empty their bowels, just near to and in full view of the old and rotting wooden tables you will soon be sitting down at. Oh, and then there are those terrible toilets down in the cellar which other reviewers on here have already mentioned. We can talk about them another day...”

  “I haven’t been in The Angel for years but it’ll be even longer before I go back. It was always a little earthy but it was cheap. Not anymore. Over £6 for a SS Nut Brown ale, with the kicker being it’s a 355ml bottle, not the old 550mls. £10 a pint effectively. The decors the same, very little atmosphere although it was late on a midweek night. Shame.”

  “My partner and I were talking away and googling what we were discussing and rather rudely told we can't be on our phones in there. Others were sat in silence and yet we were shunned for actually enjoying our afternoon. I tried sparking conversation whilst being served at the bar and recieved single word responses and little else. I found the whole experience cold, unfriendly and disrespectful. I have often seen "phone free zone" signs however to quickly Google something and be told -not asked- to get off our phones even though a few chaps were reading books (same thing with less LED display) is outlandish for the 21st century.”

  “£10.10 for a vodka orange is daylight robbery 🤣 no wonder people don’t bother going in pubs anymore. Also the toilets were absolutely vile and stunk. Ladies behind the bar were nice though.”

  “Got told off for taking out my phone! But I don't mind that. A nice cosy bar in Leeds City centre. Great selection of beers, ales, bitters as you'd expect from a Samuel Smith pub.. will visit again.”

  “This was a lovely pub for drinking, with a bright interior and old fashioned layout! The intervals between different sections create this and clock in the middle is a classic, as is the model lifebuoy. Counter is well presented and I enjoyed a pint of Cruzcampo, sitting at leather seating by a clean table!”
