About The White Swan

The White Swan is a gastropub on the High Street in Hoddesdon, with a menu of 63 dishes running from Golden Brie Wedges to Korean Chicken Bites and BBQ Pork Belly Bites. Sunday roasts come with roast potatoes, greens, and Yorkshire pudding, and the meat is sourced from the butchers next door. Desserts are available after the roast for those who want to stay on. Orders are placed at the bar, and reservations are recommended. A step-free entrance gives wheelchair users easy access, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout. The pub garden offers outdoor seating with space for children to play, and dogs are welcomed inside. The pub opens daily, giving a steady rhythm to the week rather than set weekend hours alone.

Customer Review Summary

The Sunday roast is the clear draw at The White Swan, with reviewers repeatedly praising tender meat, fresh Yorkshire puddings, and generous portions, several noting the meat comes from the butchers next door and calling it good value. Close behind, the pub garden earns consistent mention as a spot for sitting outside, and one account of a First Holy Communion event highlights burger sliders, a charcuterie board, and spring rolls served during a private function where the hosts were described as going above and beyond. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful across visits, including a Mother's Day gathering spanning several generations. A recurring caveat concerns a change in management, with one reviewer describing being funneled toward the door with no table service in parts of the bar, calling the new setup inconvenient. Separately, one reviewer reports being subjected to sexist comments and being grabbed by another patron at the bar, an incident that reviewer says led them not to return. Despite this, several diners describe returning specifically for the roast, with one recalling a plate finished before a photo could be taken.

“I was in at the weekend. Whilst ordering at the bar, there was a man in flipflops shouting disgusting, sexist things at me. This kept happening every time I went to the bar. I thought I'd get over it, but it wasn't until I was leaving when he grabbed me that I was really in shock. From what i heard from the other "regulars" apparently, he's called called "balky"... I think its a disgrace this pub lets people like this in... let alone regularly. I wont be visiting again.”

“We held our daughter’s First Holy Communion at The White Swan. Andy and Jackie could not have been more helpful, friendly and accommodating. They went above and beyond to ensure we have a really special day. We were in the pub garden where the children were able to run freely and have fun playing with crafts. The food was a cut above and really good quality - lovely burger sliders, charcuterie board, spring rolls and tiger bread sandwiches. Everyone said how enjoyable and excellent the food was. Andy and Jackie ensured we had the best day and took all the stress away so we could enjoy ourselves. They couldn’t do more of us !!! Thank you both so much! Honestly an amazing chilled venue- we will be back for future events for sure!!”

“We went for Sunday lunch following a recommendation. The food was delicious and plenty of it. The meat is from the butchers next door. I will definitely be going back as it's such good value for money and the staff were friendly too.”
