About The Fish And Eels

The Fish And Eels is a pub in Hoddesdon on Dobb's Weir Rd, in a building dating from the 1800s that stands beside the river and weir. A large garden sits at the water's edge, where swans, ducks and boats pass by. The seasonal menu includes a Beef Sunday Roast and Sticky Toffee Pudding, with pizza as another option. A set meal of two courses comes with mini desserts. Log fires burn inside the pub. Food and drink orders are placed at the bar, and the team welcomes dogs.

Customer Review Summary

The riverside setting is what reviewers raise most, with outdoor tables by the water and window seats for watching swans, ducks and canal boats go by. Food earns praise too, with the Beef Sunday Roast and Sticky Toffee Pudding singled out, and one coffee drinker enjoyed a cappuccino with a complimentary flapjack square. Several describe friendly bar and wait staff, and one suggests getting in early to secure an outdoor table. Slow service is the recurring complaint. Reviewers describe long waits at the till to order, food taking very long even at a quiet lunch, and one notes there is no screen showing what each order costs. One diner found the set menu fish pie tiny, served in a tapas bowl with two prawns, and said the pizza looked better value, while another called the food average. One reviewer reports being trapped in a broken accessible toilet with a baby after staff handed over its key, and says the duty manager then insulted them. Another describes tables left stacked with plates and glasses.

“Matt the manager called me a moron for getting locked in their broken toilet with my 1 year old We came here after a family day out whilst in the area, four adults and two young kids. One of our group had never been, and my partner and I recommended it based on good previous visits. "The food's great there," we told them. Safe to say I won't be back or recommending it to anyone else. That's the frustrating part, because so much of this place is genuinely good. The food is nice, service is quick, and the bar and wait staff are excellent, always checking in and asking if you need anything. The views over the water are lovely and there's a big outdoor area to soak up the sun. On any other day this would be a glowing review, which makes how we were treated all the more inexcusable. I asked to change my daughter and was handed a key to the accessible toilet. No warning, nothing said. There's a printed notice on the door saying the locking mechanism is broken, but I'd literally just been given the key, so I tested it myself: unlocked the door, opened and shut it again to check I could get out, then went in without locking it behind me (lifting the handle up). It made no difference. The lock failed anyway and I was trapped inside with my daughter, who was getting more and more distressed. After banging on the door with no response, I had to pull the emergency alarm to get anyone's attention. Judge for yourself what happened next. A man let me out and I went to thank him. But his immediate response was that I shouldn't have been using it. I pointed out his own staff had just given me the key. He claimed the sign says don't use it. It doesn't, it just says the lock is broken, which is exactly why I'd tested the door before going in. I asked where else I was supposed to change my daughter. No answer other than the lock doesn't work. So I said "well, fix it then" and walked off. That's the worst thing I'd said at that point. As I walked away he said "how am I supposed to fix it, you moron", behind my back, presumably thinking I wouldn't hear, but he wasn't exactly quiet about it. His own waitress was standing right there and heard everything. She came out afterwards to apologise, said she was mortified, and confirmed every word. I'll be honest, I swore back at him at that point. Not proud of it, but I'd just been trapped in a toilet with a crying baby and then insulted behind my back by the person who let me out blaming me. We later found out he was the duty manager, Matt. When my partner asked to speak to him, he wouldn't come out himself. He sent a member of staff over to say he was "too busy". It must be embarrassing working for someone like that. So my partner went and found him. He repeatedly talked over her, dismissed her because "she wasn't there", and flat-out denied it had happened. When she pointed out the waitress had witnessed the whole thing and suggested asking her, he refused, then claimed the waitress hadn't heard anything. How would he know what she heard? She'd already confirmed it to us word for word. Only when I overheard him and joined the conversation did he finally admit it, and even then he tried to justify it by saying I'd been rude (by telling his to fix the lock) The cherry on top before we left, I watched another couple take their baby into the exact same toilet. When "it shouldn't be used". Guess Matt thinks they're morons as well then. I'm not a "customer is always right" type, and I'm not after compensation or attention. The waitresses were lovely, and this isn't about them, the food, or setting. It's about how you'll be treated if anything goes wrong while Matt is on shift: blamed, insulted behind your back, lied about, and brushed off, with his own staff left to apologise for him. He shouldn't be representing this place or the good people working in it. A complaint has gone to Mitchells & Butlers head office. I won't be back, and that's a shame, because I used to love it there, had work christmas lunch there and visited every summer, even with a newborn”

“Amazing food, tasted fresh and had great flavours. The view of the canal was great, saw lots of ducks and a canal boat. The service was slower than we would have liked. It took 2 hours for starters and mains to be served over what seemed to be a quiet lunch service, as we were the only table there.”

“Just stopped in for a coffee. What a fantastic setting. Keira was great, very friendly and efficient.... made a perfect cappuccino and the complimentary flapjack square was delicious. Will definitely return for food outside by the water”

“The Fish and Eels enjoys a lovely riverside location, which is definitely its biggest selling point. Sitting outside by the water makes for a pleasant setting, especially on a nice day. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience did not quite live up to the location. The service was noticeably slow, and while the food was perfectly edible, it was fairly average and nothing particularly memorable. Overall, it is a nice place to stop for the view, but based on our experience, there are better places to eat if good food and efficient service are your priorities.”

“Love this location, and aware it gets busy so got there before 11.30 for coffee and good table. Placed food order just after 12.00 so wasn't overly hungry at that point. Food arrived pipping hot in about 20 minutes. I ordered set meal as going out to a show later.£21.99 two courses. The main was tiny. Fish pie in a tapas bowl. Two prawns, and maybe three small pieces of fish. The food in bowl didn't even come to the top. Dessert was mini as stated but delicious. Its 4.40pm. I've just got in and Will be making a sandwich as hungry. My daughters pizza looked yummy and better value. I stole some of her crust as was still hungry too! Wil return, but order Pizza.”
