Quick info
About Hong Kong Kitchen
Hong Kong Kitchen is a Chinese takeaway at 31 Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead, open daily. Portions are large, about double the size of most other Chinese takeaways, and every order comes with free prawn crackers. The menu covers curries, chef specials and rice dishes, with chow mein a regular order and sweet and sour chicken also offered in a Hong Kong style version. Prawn on toast is on the menu as a side, and set meals are available for those who want a fuller spread. Orders are phoned in, and the kitchen prepares them to be ready when the customer arrives. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are very busy, and orders take a little longer on those nights.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the portion sizes, with several calling them massive and one putting them at about double those of other Chinese takeaways. Chow mein is the dish named most, alongside sweet and sour chicken, Hong Kong style chicken and Kung po, and a set meal of special fried rice, chow mein, veggie spring rolls and Hong Kong style chicken. Others mention beef curry, satay chicken, Singapore noodles and prawn on toast. Food is repeatedly described as piping hot and tasty, even on a busy Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, and staff are called friendly and polite. One reviewer says a delivery quoted at 45 minutes arrived in 20. The complaints are few and specific. One reviewer found the lemon sauce chicken dry, hard and stringy, though the sauce was lovely, and another found the spring rolls very small, with too much pastry for the filling. One caller says the staff timed the order so it would not go cold and added free prawn crackers.

“Best Chinese I’ve had in years. Went there last night as our usual place wasn’t taking orders. It was extremely busy due to being NYE, but the quality of the food did not suffer. Massive portions and a highlight was sweet and sour chicken”

“It was very good for take away. Staff were nice over the phone and made sure to prepare the food for when my husband arrived so it wouldn't be cold. They also gave us some free prawn crackers. Portions are very big! We didn't even manage to finish it.”

“A familiar story and it goes like this. My wife and I had been out completing all those essential but mind numbing tasks which have to be undertaken on my midweek days off and, afterwards, we decided to try another Chinese takeaway. Wing Fu House was closed, don't know why, this was after 5 on a Tuesday afternoon. The Happy Garden was closed, as advertised so we headed for the proliferation of take away establishments, which is Marlowes. We chose Hong Kong Kitchen, because there is only ever one first time for everything. Front of house is a little stark, with no plants at all, but does it matter? I chose mixed vegetable chow mein, my darling wife chose sweet and sour chicken balls, we shared a bag of bland, diminutive spring rolls, more of which later and a portion of mushroom fried rice. Two observations about the food. There was too much of it, so we ate it on Wednesday as well and it is delicious. My chow mein was top drawer. My wife could only manage two chicken balls in one sitting (parked, as usual next to the River Gade in the car park close to the Church) but the sauce was good and the chicken balls were large. We didn't even open the rice on Tuesday and there was lots of it, in an XL box. OK, the spring rolls. They were very small. The pastry to filling ratio was much too high and they appear to have been bought in, so similar they were to others recently purchased. Discounting the spring rolls, the food was excellent and quickly prepared. The service was warm and friendly and I would recommend this establishment. If you visit before 18.00hrs, payment to park on Marlowes is a requirement.”
