About The Pickled Sprout
The Pickled Sprout is a botanical restaurant and bar on John St in Harrogate, serving modern British cooking in a Garden Room dining area that sits within a hotel. Starters include mushroom bordelaise and a twice baked goat's cheese soufflé. A lunch menu runs to two or three courses, with beef brought out alongside Yorkshire puddings and sharing sides placed in the middle of the table. Cauliflower cheese can be added as a side. The bar pours house-crafted cocktails, wines and lagers, which suits after-work drinks as well as a sit-down meal. Guests enter through a lounge and bar area at the rear, while hotel reception is at the front, and candles are set on the dining tables.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday lunch is what reviewers return to most, with the cauliflower cheese singled out as creamy, rich and properly cheesy, alongside the Yorkshire puddings and a Sunday menu several describe as well priced. Close behind are the starters and mains: the twice baked goat's cheese soufflé, mushroom bordelaise, calamari, chicken kiev, monkfish scampi and minute sirloin steak frites, along with a seafood share platter and sticky toffee pudding. Presentation is repeatedly praised, and many describe friendly, attentive staff and food that arrives quickly. The caveats are real, though. One diner found the cauliflower cheese dry and flavourless and the prawn cocktail bland, calling every dish underseasoned. Another received a prawn cocktail that was mostly lettuce, an overcooked, grainy soufflé and an over seasoned fillet steak. That visit coincided with a loud monthly event at the bar, where shouting and crowds made conversation impossible and the table had to be moved. One reviewer found it expensive given the ambience and poor staff interaction. Praise for the sirloin steak frites arrives with the sides of coleslaw and garlic and herb butter.

“Fairly expensive considering the ambience, service and staff interaction which was very poor. Food was OK but considering the whole visit experience, is expensive.”

“Really disappointing visit, when we arrived all of the staff looked super busy and I couldn’t find anyone to tell them we had reservations. I went to the bar who directed me back to the place we came from. After eventually being seated at a table in the garden room behind the bar we were warmly greeted by the waitress who took our order. As we waited for our starter more and more people started to arrive with staff and customers constantly rushing past our table either side and shouting to each other and staff ‘man hugging’ each other as greetings. The noise by this time was unbearable where we couldn’t even hear each other speak. The starters arrived, the prawn cocktails were mainly a bowl of lettuce and my baked cheese soufflé was over cooked and grainy. It wasn’t going well, I asked the waitress if we could move as people drinking pints had started to congregate by our table. We moved to a table at the side of the room. There was apparently 233 guests at an event which happens the first Tuesday every month! If things the case then either we should have been informed or bookings outside of the hotel shouldn’t be taken as this was a terrible experience for us a diners. Mains arrived, 2 x fish and chips were nice, as was the sea bass however the fillet steak was so over seasoned it was boarding difficult to eat. I won’t be back again and cannot recommend based on this experience.”

“We went to The Pickled Sprout for an unplanned Sunday dinner during a weekend break, and we’re really glad we did. We turned up 15 minutes early and were seated straight away, even though it was pretty busy. The place is quite dark, but the candles on the tables give it a calm, slightly romantic vibe. Service was spot on — everyone was really friendly and attentive, and everything came out quickly without feeling rushed. We both went for the Sunday menu, which is really well priced for the quality (£28.95 for two courses). We had the beef dinner, which comes with sharing sides in the middle of the table. My beef was a bit fattier than my partner’s, but still really tasty. The highlight though was the cauliflower cheese I ordered on the side — properly creamy, rich, and actually tasted cheesy (which is rare in restaurants!). I finished with a sticky toffee pudding, which was also really nice. The food is definitely on the richer side, so worth keeping that in mind — I probably overdid it a bit, but it was worth it. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in Harrogate. I’d 100% go back — just maybe not eat quite as much next time!”

“Fantastic food served in a stunning venue with outstanding service. Food was to the table very quickly. Presentation and quality are absolutely incredible. Can especially recommend the calamari, the chicken kiev, mushroom bordelaise and the monkfish scampi. Staff are attentive without being even remotely overwhelming. Excellent service.”

“Rather average Sunday dinner at pickled sprout, obviously in December the place is very popular and busy and the staff did a fantastic job, sadly the food was very average, every dish needed more flavour, the prawn cocktail was very bland and boring, it's such a simple dish that you can modernise give more oomph. The bread and tiny bit of butter felt like I was eating in the 90s. The cauliflower cheese was dry with no flavour. The beef and the pork were good quality and well cooked but that's as far as the positives go. Will we go back for a Sunday lunch....? I doubt it. But may come back to try some different dishes when the kitchen isnt so busy.”
