Customer Review Summary

The Whaler platter and haddock draw the most praise, with reviewers repeatedly describing crispy batter, flaky fish and fresh, fluffy chips, alongside sides like mushy peas, onion rings and a trifle or brandy snap for dessert. The prawn cocktail also gets a mention as a generous starter. Many single out quick table service, gluten free and veggie options, and touches like separating gravy from chips so nothing goes soggy before eating. Close behind the praise, though, a recurring set of complaints centers on portions and consistency: several reviewers describe chip portions shrinking, one counting barely 10 to 15 chips in a single portion, others reporting reheated, cold chips or a fish cake with little fish but plenty of bones. A few describe unfriendly or dismissive staff, including one visit where a manager seemed disinterested in complaints, and another where a till rang up an extra portion on a simple single fish order. Still, most describe being served quickly and warmly, with one visit ending in colouring sheets and small gifts for the children at the table.

“Just popped in today at 2pm or so for a single fish. We are fairly regular visitors - no longer! No one else in the queue. Not a difficult order - 1 fish please. On checking the till it rings up £16.30, showing 1 fish and 1 fish and chips - …”

“We had a great meal and I would highly recommend this place. It is a popular place so get there early if you can. It is upstairs but there is a lift available if you can't manage the stairs. …”

“Excellent service, lovely staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our food and they catered for gluten free and veggie options. The kids got colouring crayons and a colouring sheet which kept them nice and busy. They even got little gifts at the end which was a lovely surprise to end the meal. Our little one is currently cuddling her teddy!”
